Fact and Fancy. Datu oP Joun Awsort, Esq.—Died, in Ando- ver, Mass. on the 2d inst. John Abbott, Esq. tor- merly of Brunswick, aged 84 years. Mr, Abbott will be most favorably remembered in this State, for his long and useful services as an officer o! It seems that she had finished her wash- ing, and had sat down at the window to look out for a little girl, who had been accustomed to come in and stay with her infant while she went to hang her clothes upon the line to dry, and while she was thus engaged, the child had climed up to the side of the tub, pitched in, and was drowned, without making sufficient noise to attract the attention of itsmether, who stood but a few feet distant.—Providence Journal. Promer Gexivs.—While the fire was raging at the Dutch Church on Tuesday last,\an incident oc- curred that is werth recording. When the engines arrived, the longest ladder that could be obtained was placed against the wall, which lacked some three or four feet of reaching te the gutter, Tuc flames were bursting out, and all saw that unless Some one was placed on the roof with a pipe, no- thing could avert the impending destruction. At this eritical juncture a stout chimney eweep, who happened to be present, darted up the ladder, calling upon the firemento follow him. When he reached the top, he planted himself firmly and holding to the gutter, made his body a splice to the ladder, and di- rected the man nearest to climb over his back and shoulders to the roof. This was done, and thus the fire kept in check until other ladders were spliced and arrangements completed to subdue the raging element.—Poughkeepsie Eagle.
