Let persons ofcommon sense at least think, and the tricks are easily seen through. Atthe New Board thero was also a better business— Sales U. 8. Loan, 115. ‘The loss of the steamer Columbia exciteda good deal of sensation, although there was less of surprise than might have been onticipated. The very dangerous na vigation between Boston and Halifax, along a coast, the difficulties of which are immensely enhanced by the al. most continuous dense fogs with which it is enveloped, and the terrific rise and fallof the tides amidst rocks of the most fearful character, have caused the route to be viewed with suspicion. The facilities afforded by the New York harbor, which communicates directly with the ocean, affording aclear run and good sea room, are #0 infinitely superior to those of the Boston route, that it becomes matter of astonishment that any hesitation as to choice should ever have been evinced. Massachusetts bay for a winter passage has long been the terror of the N. England tars, whose refuge in foul weather has uni formly been the Vineyard and Long Island Sound. Why those dangers should be needlessly braved, is not easily understood. Inour article some weeks since, in remarking upon the resources of Ohio, we stated that the superior fertility of the other Western States, Illinois and Indiana, combined with their comparative freedom from taxation were ra: pidly superseding the resources of Ohio, and while that State is immensely increasing its debts and expenses, its potual means are jon the decline, ,while the aggregate agricultural wealth of the Lake circuit is on the increase. In corroboration of this view we give the following offi- cial table of the receipts of Flour and Wheat at Buffalo, with the corresponding receipts at Cleveland, as follows: Jheveland Rhyne Bical Carn met tt sty ta 67:303 295,591 17) 261, 83.791 240,988 "08 Bia 70,342 211923 31,982 on 88,047 102,365 092 428,247 ‘Thus the receipts of flour and wheat at Buflalo are equivalent to 552,111 bris, flour,an increase of 104,000 br s. or 25 per cent over those of last year. At Cleveland the receipts are equal te 108,113 brle.,being 4000 bris, less than last year—and 24,000 less than the previous year. This displays a great falling off in Ohio Products at a moment when the aggregate receipts are very large. With this falling off in quantities received on the Ohio canals, the tolls are at rates 20 per cent less than last year, This de- clinein the resources of Ohio must arise from somearti- ficial burden, which paralyses her industry. The soil of Ohio is not less prolific than formerly—the climate not less genial. She hasjlike Michigan and Iilineis, become released from a large portion of herbanks—why then are her resources failing her? Is it not that the more prolific soils of INinois and Michigan are less burdened with tax- ation? The farmer of Illinois can grow rich at prices at which him of Ohio will be unable to meet his taxes, which amount for the State to $2,800,000 per annum. The condition of the trade of the country is very singu- ler. A country of great wealth, and with money exceedingly abundant upon the Atlantic borders, is pa- ralyzed in all ite channels of business, by the terrible influence of bad, unequal and unjust tariff laws. We take the following from the Illinois Sangamon Journal:— ‘We happened to bein a store of this city a day ortwo since, and curiosity led us to takedown the present prices of the following articles, with their prices a year since, before the ‘ rascally tarift’ went into operation. These [svar show the effect of the tariff upon the cest of the eid articles of consumption among the people of the ‘eat:— Prices in 1812. Present prices Broadcloths, per yard, $5 0046 00 350a Sattmets, 1 5042 00 750195 K 75 a1 50 38a 70 30004 v0 150.02 00 sa 75 2a Ba 3B 1236 0 1836 aa & nga = ngs, a a Brown sheetings, Wea 16 Ba 10 ‘Vickings, 2a 38 Iga 20 Blue dniligs, 2a 31 ba = “ The prices of boots and shoes are reduced from 50 to 60 per cent on the prices of last year.” These goods on shelves of the Springfield stcre, were probably imported last year, under the low tariff, or manufactured here, while itwas in operation, yet the prices have fallen near 50 per cent, notwithstaading that im- ports have nearly ceased since the expiratien of the cem. promise act. What an appalling evidence is this of the prostration of business under the influence of iniquitous legislation! By destroying the outlet for agricultural produce, the means of the great mass of eonsumers of goods have beem so far destroyed as to deprive them of the means of buying their usual supplies, even at the ex” traordinary sacrifice to which dealers offer to submit. Of what use is it to the farmer that his toil is rewarded by a bountiful Providence with a prolific crop, if after the wants of his family are supplied, human legislation inter” feres and forbids him from selling the surplus, er which is the same thing, from receiving foreign goods in pay. ment? Of what useisitto him that Great Britain has thrown down the barriers to trade on her part, if the Uni ted States government interposes new ones? But the present tariff steps in and forbids the farmer from receiving any thing in pay but specie. This is tantamount to prohibiting the trade. Yet the farmer laboring under this injustice, is told that it is for his good that his market is lest, and his produce sunk invalue so much that the whole yield of the farm will not bring money enough to pay his mortgage.
