I left Bri ftol on the 21ft of March after being detained three Week: by contrary Winds and at laft came out with a Wefllerly Wind, but moderate Weather. On Wedne(day the 4th of April, being abouttwo Leagues welt from Cape Clear, a large Ship beating to Wind ward gave Chace tousat z P. M. and at 6 ditto was within Gun fhot, hoifted French Colours, and fired his Bow Chafe ; we then began to play four Guns upon him from our Stern ; at half pait Seven, he run clofe up along our Starboard fide and gave us his whole Broadfide of Great Guns, with a vaft Nam- ber of Small Arms from his Tops and Quarter Deck; we returned the Fire upon him as brifl as poilibie for 5 Glaffes ; he then being (0 Leward of us, bore away to refit, as I imagine. I being very much fhattered in both Sails and Rigging, got refitted as fatt as I could, and kept clofe to the Wind. I could perceive him do fo too, endeavouring 10 get up to us ; I took the oppertuniiy of a Squal, to go on the other tack with an Intent to loofe him, which had the defired Effe. Next Day the Wind coming to the N. W. I put about and ftood to the Southward, at 10 A. M. faw a Sail upon the weather Bow which I judged to be the fame Privateer, I directly tacked and ftood from her, fhe crouded all the Sail fhe could after us, and fome of our fuding Sail Booms gave way, at 7 P, M, came up with us, and began a fe- cond Engagement, very farioufly within Piftc]l Shot of each other for 6 Giafles. 1 believe fome head Officer aboard of him was Killed,as I could here ma- nya Marélue cryed out. He then bore away before the Wind with his Sails all flying about his Ears, and Yards fhot away, that I believe he was in a very bad condition, otherwife he would not bare away, being far {uperior Force to the Grace. I could not count his Guns exa@ly, bat I am fure he had not lefs then 2z, nor more then 26. All his Shot found on board of us are nine Pounders: One which came thro’ a little above the waters Edge, went through my own Cheft, and deftroyed moft of my Papers. 1Ihad 8 Men wounded at the lower Deck Guns, the Man at Helm, and two more npon Deck, and left a meer wreck ; the Hull very much fhattered, the foremaft fhot half through, the main Rigging and Sails all Shot to Pieces, fome of our Lower Deck Ports knocked to Pieces, one of the Pumps and Bulk-Head, in fhort both Mafts and Boom are gone. The Day after I fell in with the Englith Fleet from South Carolina, who fupplyed me with a Fifh for the foremaft, and feveral other neceflaries, I then Proceeded on, and on the 1zth of April, came up with the Snow and took her without making any Refiftance, the is be- tween two and three Hundred Tons, loaded with dry Goods, Wine, Brandy, Flour, Potk, ard other Commodities for Quebeck, manned with 23 Men and Boys, the Doer of which have been of great fervice to hereof as foon as may be, that he may make Prepa- ration accordingly. foon as may be conveniently done, with fuch others Province of NEW-HAMPSHIRE, as may be pafs’d in the mean Time ; by which Or- HEREAS a new Edition of \%% N.
