By aprivate letter from France,which L4 came by the Dutch mail, we hear that the fleet un- der Admiral Pocock defeated the French Eleet on the 3d of Aug. and had abfolutely taken and deftroy’d them all, had not a frefh gale fprang up, by which the French fhips got under the guns of Pondicherry : that fome of the French Ships were deftroyed in the engagement, and the reft were fo mach (hatter'd, that they could not put to fea for fome time, and when they did, were fo leaky that they were in danger of finking before they arrived at the ific of France. By %euen from Lifbon we learn, tuat all the Jefuits in the kingdom of Portugal had bzi> rought prifo- ners to that city, where above 8co are already con- fined, and that they had but 6d. each per day allow- ed them for their fubfiftance. : By letters from France it appears, that Gen. Lally, after taking Fort St. David’s marched up to Madrafs, where he was repulfed, the Englith being joined by the Nabob of Arcott ; and that in his retreat he was greatly harraffed and loft a number of men, but had got fafe into Pondicherry. *T'is faid that the Governor of Fort St. David’s, having been apprized of the defigns of the French, had fent to Madrafs every thing of value belonging to'the company. By a lift of men of war and frigates in the fervice of Great- Britain, it appears, that there are 113 of the line,& 287 frigates, floops, bomb vefiels,& fire fhips. March 277. Accouants from Vienna tell us, they had juft received a hat and fword for Marfhal Daun, which had been fent to Rome for the Pope’s blefling. April z. Advice ia received of the arrwal at Emb- den of the whole reinforcement from England and Scotland, for the army of Prince Ferdinand ; the for- mer having had a tedious paffage, occafioned by con- trary winds. d According to letters from Paris, the French Court, in order to make the People eafy, has reported that two Englifh Noblemen are there incognito, negotiat- ing a peace ; and that the conditians on which it was to be fettled were very far advanced. Her Cargo confifts of 29 Hogfheads and 10 Barrels of Sagar, with z Barrels and two Dags of Coffee. Befides the abave Sloop, Capt. HALIFAX, May.:26. Since our laft 15 Tranfports having on board the Troops that embark'd at this Place under Convoy of the Leoftaff and another Frigate, with three Fire- fhips, {ail’d from hence on the intended Expedition. A Spanith Ship of about 320Tons burthen arrived here on Wednelday laft ; the was taken by one of Admiral Durell’s Squadron, and was from France in Company with 12 others, under Convoy of 3 Fri- gates bound to Quebeck,chiefly laden with Provifions; and as Admiral Durell’s Squadron has taken this fhip, tis to be hop’d he will be able to give a good Ac- count of the Reft. BB 1O N undia Laft Monday His Excellency our Governer re- turned from the penobfcot Country, in the province Ship King George, having happily fucceeded in the Obje&t of His Expedition by taking poficfiion, for the Crown, in bekalf of this province, of the King’s an- cient Rights, and eftablifhing the fame, by fetting down a Fort on penobfcat River.—His Excellency, after having reconnoitred the Country to the Head of the firlt Falls, fix’d upon a high point of Land that runs acrofs the River three quarters of a Mile, 2bout feven Miles abave the old French Fort at Pentagoet. And we hear the Materials being already prepared and framed at Falmouth, the Fort will be compleat- ed in three Weeks or a Month.
