Whoever has found the fame, the Printer herco ing, ‘ between Mr. Sreodley’s and the Reverend Mr. Browne’s by Way of the Town Houle, a OST Yefterday Morn e excepting a few defperate men who have taken to the mountains and ftill refufe to come in 3 two or three of which have been taken and hanged,as an example to the reft. —And that on a fummons fent to the in- habitants of Marigalante, they have figni- fied their defire of being included in the fame capitulation, which has beenagreed to. — And that eleven tranfports have been or- dered to carry fuch of the inhabitants to Martinico, as chufed to retire thither. On the 28th ult. M. Bompar’s fquadron, confifting of g fhips of the line and 3 fri- gates, appeared off the eaft fide of Grande- terre and landed 550 men ; buta ceffation of arms as well as the principal articles of capitulation having been before that time agreed to, the inhabitants refufed to join them in a further refiftance ; and they were all reimbarked, but 10 or 12 Swifs regulars who came over to the Englith ; and one of whom was immediately fent up to the Commodore with an account of M. Bom- par’s proceedings and fituation.—I¢ is faid thefe deferters gave an affeting account of the miferies that were fuffered at Martinico from the want of provifions, and the dread of being attacked; & that they were fatisfied their example was not followed by their Comrades from no other motive than the want of a fafe opportunity to come over to the Englith, and be relieved from their mi- feries.— They alfo gave a full account of the condition of M. Bompar’s f{quadron, and in particular declared that fome of the thips failed very badly. And, The day before yefterday a gentleman arrived here from Barbados by way of Do- minico and Guardaleupe ; from whom we have the following account, viz. That fome veflels arrived at Barbados before he failed from thence, which had feen M. Bompar’s fquadron to windward of Marigalante ; and that on his arrival off that iland on Tuefday the 1ft inftant, he alfo difcovered the fqua- dron and was near enough to {ee their hull’s from the deck ; on which he made the beft of his way to Prince Rupert’s Bay, where he arrived about 10 o’clock the next morn- ing, and informed the Commodore of what he had feen ; and by 10 o’clock in thee- vening all the fquadron (being 13 fhips of the line, belides frigates and other vefiels of war, in all 22) were under fail, and at noon the Day following, was far eneugh to wind- ward to weather Marigalante ; and, as it was judged, not more than 15 or 20 leagues from M. Bompar, , From the feveral Accounts we have had of the motions of M. Bempar, it appears that he had been cruifing about thefe iflands for this fortnight paft ; and the 5 fhips which came within gun fhot of Englifh Harbour on Thurfday laft P certainly were part of his fquadron.—Hence it appears how greatly thofe gentlemen were miftaken who thought that by Commodore Moore’s lying in Prince Ruperts Bay, Bompar was effectually blocked up, and prevented from fuccouring Guardaloupe ; and from hence alfo, an argument is drawn in favour of the opinion of thofe who thought, thofe pur- pofes would be beft anfwered by Mr.Moore’s lying at the mouth of Fort Royal Bay, and forcing Bompar up into the Harbour, We hear Brigadier General Crump has been appointed Governor of Guardaloupe and the Iflands adjacent. And, from good authority, we are in- formed that the French have declared fince their furrender, that the dread of being at- tacked in their rear by the Garrifon of Fort Royal under Governor Melvill, while in danger of being puthed in front by our Ar- my, contributed much to their fubmiffion, and giving up a woody, narrow Country, between the mountains and fea, very full of paffes and capable of defence. May 12. A Gentleman who left Guar- daloupe laft Wednefday, reports, than on the Appearance of Commodore Moore’s Squadron off Marigalante on the Friday or Saturday before, a Tender was fent from Point Petre to fpeak with them ; and on her return the Mafter declared, he overtook the Squadron near Dominice ; and was inform- ed they were going to anchor again in Prince Ruperts Bay, and that Mr. Bompar was gone back to Martinico. Our Readers will fee the French Account of our Lofs in the Eaft Indies, (See fir/t Page of the Gazette ) which we believe is not a little exaggerated : yet they are obliged to confefs their Squadron retired to Pondicher- ry. & And Capt. Dixon, from Briftel, pofitively affures, that before he fail’d, a Letter had been receiv’d from Mr. Nugent, Member of Parliament for Briftol, giving an Account of r« 7o taking of Fort St. David’s, and th: intirc Defeat of the French Squadron,
