P A R IS, (in France) Marchq. 1 HE Marquis de Montmorency Laval, Colonel I of foot, is arrived from the Eaft Indies with the following particulars of the {uccefs of the Kings forces againft the Englifh in that part of the world : The 28th of April 1758, M. de Lally, General of the King's forces, landed at Pondiclierry with twe batealions of his regiment. The fame day he de- tach’d the Count d’Eftaing, with two battalions of the regiment of Lorrain and 300 Indians, to go and in- veft Goudelour ; and in the night he fet out himfelf with a detachment of the royal corps of artillery, four pieces of cannon and two companies of grenadiers of his own regiment, in order to join the Count d’Efta: ing, before the above mentioned place, which capitu- Jated the fourth day of the fiege. M. de Lally im- mediately after caufed Fort St. David to be invefted, and in three days time his troops carried the feveral worlks that defend the approach to it, fword in hand; but the badnefs of the roads retarding the arrival of the artillery, it was the zoth of May before they could open the trenches before the fort, which held out to the 2d of June ; when the garrifon, which confifted of 720 Englith troops, and 1700 Blacks were made prifoners of war. The {ame day that this fort furrendered, M. de Lally {ent a large detach- ment to Divicotty, another fort in the pofleflion of the Englifh, about eleven leagues from that of St. . David, but the enemy had abandoned it before our ¥ troopscame up, and had nailed up the cannon, con- fitting of 8o pieces. At Fort St. David they found 180 pieces of cannon and mortars. M. de Lally sfter providing for the {afety of thefe three places, marched with the reft of the Forces towards Madrafs swhich he likewife propofes to make a conqueft of. . Befides the sbove account publified by order of the (French) court, the following is extralted from the journals of the fquadron of the Count d’Apche, brought by the Sieur Larhantel, who was fent ex- prefs from India on board the Diligence frigate.- — The z7th of Jan, 1758, the {guadron commanded by the Count d’Apche failed from the Iile of France for India. It then confited of one of the Kings thips, 8 of the India company’s, and two frigates, viz. the Zodiaque of 74 guns ; the Comte de Provence, and the Bien Aime, each of ;8 guns; the Vengeur of g ; the Ducd'Orleans, Duc de Bourgogne, St.Louis, the Conde, and the Moras, each of 5o Gunsj the Sylphide of 30, 2nd the Diligence of 26. On the 28th of April this ficet appeared upon the coaflt of Corcmandel, before the Towan of Goudelour and Fort St. David. Tho’they were in wane both of provifions and water, it was refolved to take advantage of the confternation which their arrival occafioned at Goudelour, in order to block up that place by fea, whillt M. de Lally went to Pondicherry, in order to take the troops with him from thence to invelt the place on the land fide, and in confequence of this re- folution, the Comte de Provence man of war,and the Diligente frigate, were detached from the fleet to go with M. de Lally to Pondicherry. The next day being the z7th, the Sylphide frigate, which was upon the lock out, made a fignal of having difcovered a {quadron of nine men of war. The Count d’Apche immediately drew up hisin a line of battle, and after fome preparations on both fides, the engagement be- g an about two in the afternoon, and continued with great vivacity till dark. We expeéted to renew the engagement next day, but the Englith fleet being fomewhat fhattered, tho't proper to retire to Madrafs The Englith fleet which was com- mended by Vice Admiral Pocock, was compofed of the Yarmouth, Elizabeth,Cumberland and Newcaflle, ‘each of 70 guns ; the Weymouth, Tyger, and Salif- bury of 60 ; the Prote&tor of 44 ; and the Queen- borough of 20 guns. On the 3oth of April the French fquadron being off Alemparve, feven leagues from Pondicherry, the Bien Aime man of war baving broke her cable in the wight, was obliged to run afhore, and was loft, but all the crew were faved. The 7th of May the fqua. dren arrived at Pondicherry, and landed the troops, » ammunition and money. The 1t of June the Eng- y [ lith fquadron was difcovered at fome diftance coming back from Madrafs to the relief of Fort St David, the fiege of which was flill carrying on. Upon this the Count d’Apche fet fail with his Fleet, but theEng- Containing the Frefbeff Advices lilh not caring to renew the fight, retreated again to the coaft of Madrafs. However the {quadron of M. d’Apche went the next day, being the 3d of June, to Fort St. David, which not being reiieved by tne Eng- lifh fquadron, was obliged to capitulate. From the oth to the 17th of June, that M. d’Apche came back with his fleet to Pondicherry, he kept cruifing off the Ifland of Ceylan, before Negapatan and Karical, during which time he tock an Edglith brigantine cal- led the Experiment, Capt. Whiteway, and fent her to Pondicherry, where the whole {22t returned the 18th, and fiaid till the z7th of July, Which time was taken up in refitting, and taking ina frefh {apply of pro- vifions. But the Englith {quadroa appearing again, the Count d’Apche again fet fail with the fame num- ber of thips as before, except the Bien- Aime, which was loft, and the Sylphide frigate which wis difarmed. The two {quadrons were within fight and watching each other five or fix days ; but at length onthe 3d of Auguft, about one o'clock in the afterroon, they engaged again with great fury, and continued {o to do for above two hours without any decifive advan- tage. The Englith fquadron fuffered greatly in this fecond engagement, and the Count d’'Apche would have had all the advantage of it, had it not been for fome accidents which happened on board his own fhip and the Comte de Provence, the fails and rigging of which were fet on fire by the unfair practices of the Englith. The fame thing happened to the Zodiaque, with this additional calamity, that the fire had like to have communicated to the powder room. After thefe accidents the fquadron was obliged to retreat, the Zodiaque bringing up the rear, and the next day caft anchor eff Pondicherry, where the Englifh did not attempt to attack them any more. ‘The fhips being now refitted in Auguft, the Count d’Apche failed from Pondicherry the 3d of September, and arrived the 13th of November 2t the Ifle of France, where he found his Majefty’s thips le Minotauze, I'Illufire, aud I"Acuf. ; According to the lift of the killed and wounded in the two engagements, there were 70 killed, and 190 wounded on board the Zodiaque only, of 74 guns ; and the lofs of the whole fquadron amounted.to 251 killed, and 602 wounded. Paris, March 5. The conqueft of Fort St. David is locked npon a: a prelude to that of Madrafs. Our troops muft have found great riches in Fort St. David, the Englith merchants having, its faid, lodged a goed part of their effc@s there, thinking that the fafeft afylum for them upon the coaft of Coromandel. It is confident'y faid that the(French)King is refol- ved to allow hisProteftant fubjeéts to bave aDeputy or Reprefentative always near his perfon, to inform him of their jult complaints ; in confequence of which, and as a proof of their attachment to his Majefty, the whole body are to furnifth to him o millions livres. It is alfo faid, that a lift hath been taken of the Pro- teftant officers in the army, and that a new order of Knighthood will foon be inftituted, into which they may be admitted. We are fitting out at Rochfort one man of war of 74 guns, one of 70, two of 64, one of 50, and thtee frigates of 30 guns each. : Troops, Provifions, and Stores of all Kinds, are immediately to be embarked at Bourdeaux, for North- America. i Vienwa, ( the capital city of the circle of Aufiria, and of the German Empire ) Feb. 28. Their grand army, it’sfaid, isaflembling between Breflau and Schweid- nitz; another corps of 40,000 men is_formed in the neighbourhood of Néifs, under General Fouquet; and it’s juft now reported that the enemy have made themfelves mafters of Troppau. We impute the caule of thefe motions to the conduét of a large party of our light troops, who, before the expiration of the fufpenfion of arms agreed upon between the two ar- mies till the end of this month, had carried off feme hundreds of recruits from the hofpital at Budiffin ; at which the KING or Prussia being enraged, im- mediately fent orders to his Generals to recommence hoftilities, without any regard to the armiftice. It is yet uncertain on what fide their principal efforts will be made ; but as it’s very likely they defiga to fall upon our quarters in Moravia, ten regiments are ordered that way ; and fome others to the confines of Silefia, to fupport General de Ville. We are affur- ed that Marfhal Daun has at length obtained his requeft, and will fet out in a few days with a charte- blanche. The King of Pruflia arrived at Neifs the OCAZET TS Foreign and Domeflick.
