AST Week a Skkmifh happened at Oftritz, in ¥ Upper-Lufatia, between Littau and Garlitz, i which amounted to no more than this ; A fmall Body of Auftrian Irregulars attempted to {urprize a Battalion of Prince Henry’s Regiment, quarter’d there ; but as yet, we have not learnt for certain, which Party fuf- ' fered the moft. Yefterday Morning the King's plea- » fure was fignified to a!l the Saxon Officers, who were al- lowed to be here on their Parole, as Prifoners of War, that they fhould leave this City by the 1ith of next ontb, and repair to the different places afligned them Saxony. Thefe Orders of his Pruflian Majefly, are , Shought very prudent, as it would appear very unna- e ral for them to be here, as fo many Spies, at a Time v hen the moft ferious Difpofitions are making for open- * fing the Campaign. The Wives of the Pruffian Offi- ters and Soldiers who came to vifit their Hufbands in their Winter Quarters, are alfo ordered to return to their » refpe&ive Habitations, by the Beginning of next Month, ‘« Dantsick, (in Rigal Praffia) Feb. 17. We are in conftant Expectation of hearing of a Battle between the Ruffian and Pruffian Armies in Courland. By the laft Advices upwards of 25000 of the former had already afs’d the Dwina, and the fame Number were aflem- bled in Livonia, and on the March into Courland. At the fame Time we are affured, the Proffians, to the Number of 24000 Men, are atually encamp’d not far from Memel, and have a large Train of Artillery, which the Ry dians have not, their whole T'rain confiiting of a few {mall Field Pieces, the Cannon from Peter{- 3 burgh, not being as yet arrived ; infomuch that it is thought the Pruffians will attack them to great Advaa- tage ; Field- Maifhal Lehwald, having as it is confidently afferted, pofitive Orders to march into Courland, and attack the Ruffians on the fist Advice of their paffing the Dwina. The advanc’d Guards of both Parties are algeady within a few Miles of each other. ’ kil o it i - o BTy March 1. The Proffians are all iu Motion.—~Admi- ¥al Rowley has hoitted his Fiag on™ board the Harwich. ‘~-Admiral Smith is appointed Admiral of the Blue. Extra& of a Letter from Zittay, in Lufatia, Feb. 21. . ¢ The firk Baualion of Prince Henry’s Regiment having been fent from hence under the Command of Major Goetz, to relieve the Poft of Hirfchfield, on the River Neifla, was attacked there the 1gth Inft. in the Night, by 4000 Auftrians, provided with a Train of Field Pieces. The latter having at Break of Day paf- fed theNeifla, affaulted on two Sides the Poft of Hir{ch- field, which was defended by twa Redoubts, each occu- pied by 50 Men. The Fire from both Parties was at firlk very brifk ; but the Auflrians, by Means of their Superiority, having forced their Way into the Redoubt an the Right Hand, the Pruffians were obliged to aban- don it, and retire to Zittau, after Major Goetz, with 20 Men, had been killed, a Lieutenant, and 19 woun- ‘ ded ; and a Major, an Adjutant, a Captain, and a Lieutenant, made Prifoners by the Auftrians, who took two Field Picces in the Redoubt. The Lofs of the latter « eftimated at 30 Men. The Enemy attacked Her- wigfdorff in the Night, but were beat off by the Pru- flian Artillery. An Englith Ship with 1100 Barrels of Gunpowder, is taken by the Prince de Soubize Privateer. March 8. We learn from the Hague, that all Per- {ons of Penetration appear to be extremely apprehen- ¥ five of the Events of the fucceedirg Campaign ; in + . which, if the Aliies of Vienna are vittorious, the Re- publick will be entirely at the Mercy of Popifh Confe- deracy ; and if his Pruflian Majefty extricates himfelf from his prefent Difficalties, they have no great Rea- A fon to promife themf{clves much from the Condaé they :fiy_q purfukd in the prefent critical Conjunéture of Fairs. { weh 1oy, It is faid the Lords of the Admiralty i ii’ecg to the Merchants, that on its being made appear to thedn that dny Commanders of Men of War ive in their Daty of convoying or pro- bo Privateers, on Notice It with according are to regard Lters of the lately «. Itis certain that the King of Denmark has acceeded to the Proteftant Alliance, and will furnith an Army of 25,c00 Men. A very nice feratiny is now making into the caufe of {ome of our publick Mufortunes, by Land and Sea, whether occafioned by Want of Provifions, warlike Stores, Men, or proper Gilicers to command. Extradtof a Letter fror- Cagwerly, duted Feb. 24. “ On Monday laft 25 on: John Maiters wasdigging, in o/dei to drive a L~ g/sft in, to build a Booth for the Farr, his Pick axe firsck againft fomething which founded like Iron ; havin cleared away the Dirt, he found a Trap Door: He mmediately called two Men who were at work near kin ; and having lifted up the Door, two of them went down by a Ladder, and took a Lanthoin with them : when they came up, their Ac- count of it was, that ther: was a Room near 60 Feet in Length, and.about 25 in Breadth ; that they found nothing but a Cheft, which was o heavy, that they could not bring it up : uron this feveral People went down, and breaking open the Cheft, it proved to ble full of old Gold and Silver Ccins; they found a Door too, which they opened, and ia a Clofet found a few Books printed in Saxon Charafiers, and fome Manufcripts in the fame. Fortunatus Wright, has lately had two fmart En -agements in the channel of Malta, of three Flours ez h, (one in the Night, the other by Day ) with the FHirondelle, a French Polacco of 26Guns and 280 Men ; but notwithftanding the great Inequality of Men, Gur asd Weight of Metal, yet Capt. Wright obliged hir. to (heer off, and they both putinto Malta the 2d of fanuary, to refit ; bat poor Wright bas met with we fe ‘T'reatment here than he did before ; for tho’ be Ii¥d feveral thot under Water, which made it abfolutely neceflary to heave down, yet, by the Intereft of the French Fadtion, he was denied that Liberty ; and afterwards, upon Account of two Slaves having taken Refufe on board him, he has been fequeftered in Port, and cut off from all daily Provifions, and even Water, ’till he reftores them ; but as theJerfey was hourly expefled at Malta, we hope Sir William Burnably will obtain his Releafe. The Hirondelle is one of the Veflels ficted out from Toulon, exprefly to feek him.” For juflice, Britons I le? us loudly call, raitors muft either bleed, or England fall. LL hopes of mercy being now excluded from Mr. Byng, and his fate irrevocably fixed, let us defiit from all other difputes about the inconfiltency of the fentence, and turn our eyes upon thofe who employed him ; upon thofe who are, in the opinion of the whole nation, infinitely more culpable than he ; upon thofe, who though they certainly knew that the French in- tended to invade Minorca, many months bzfore they carried.it into execution, yet negleted to fend out a fleet to prevent fuch invafion § upon thofe who knew that St. Philip’s caftle was to be befieged, and that it had not half a garrifon fufficient to defend itlelf ; yet negleted to fend it a timely and proper reinforcement; upon thofe, who knew that the French fleet confifted of twelve thips of the line, and yet fent only ten againft them, though they had many more at that time lying idle in Harbour ; upon thofe, who, by their negleci,or wotfe, have occafioned the lofs of fuch a mulutude of our fellow fubjeéts lives in America, and brought that ineftimable part of the Britith dominions .into the ut- moft danger of being Ioft. Let us, I fay, according to the numberlefs addrefles of the nation, and general voice of the people, keep our eyes ftedfaftly fixed upon thefe capital offenders ; and moft humbly befeech his royal majefty, thac they may be called toa ftriét ac- count, and that juftice may proceed in its due courle, and be impartially executed on all who fhall be found uilty. y The Com—?t M-——"s Addrefs to bis M-——y.
