LS 4 | * Friday, May 20. 1757, « v ThagiNew-Hampfbire b By e B pube e b bikib: bbb B de bebebed:f ok gy o With the Frefbeff Advices Bt it By Capt. Mc Caufland from Glafcow, ave received the Sollowing Intelligence. L Y0 N D <O N, March 1. by the King to Mr. Secretary Pitt, to be by him prefented to the Honourable Houle of Com- mons, was-as followeth : GEORGE R. ¢ His Majelty, agreeable to his Royal Word, for the a TH E Meflage delivered lalt Saturday Morning 4« Sake of Juftice, and of Example to the D.fcipline of > " fatally roag ¢ the Navy, and for the Safety and Honour of the Na- ¢ tion, was determined to have let the Law take its ¢ Courfe, with relation to Admiral Byng, as upon Mon- ¢ day next ; and refifted all Sollicitations to the contrary. | ¢« Bt being informed, that a Member of the Houfe of Commons, who was a Member of the Court Mar- tial, which tried the faid Admiral, has, in his Place, applied to the Houfe in Behalf of himfelf, and feveral other Members of the faid Court, praying the Aid of ¢ Parliament to be releafed from the Oath of Secrefy ¢ impofed on Courts Martial, in order to difclofe the ¢ Grounds whereon Sentence of Death pafied on the faid ¢ Admiral, the Refult of which Difcovery may fhew the ¢ Sentence to be improper ; his Majefty has thought fit to « refpite the Execution of the fame,in order that there 4 may be an Opportunity of knowing by the feparateEx- ¢ amination of the Members of the faid Court, upon ¢ Oath, what Ground there is for the above Suggeftion. ¢ His Majefty is determined ftill to let this Sentence ¢ be carried into Execution, unlefs it fhall appear, from ¢ the faid Examination, that Admiral Byng was unjuaftly ¢ condemned. G Feb. 23. Tt iscomputed, that during the prefent war, 55 French Privatcers have been taken and brought into our poits ; and it is faid, the number of our privateers taken does not exceed fix. The French have now out, according to calculation, zoo privateers. It is ftrongly rumoured in the difiri&t of St. James’s that articles of High Crimes and Mifdemeanour, will be exhibited thortly, ngaint o geatleman lately i great employment. A few nights fince a very feditious paper was ftuck upon the gate at St. James’s, relating to the execution of Mr. Byng. A Letter from America informs us, that the public Report there is, that inftead of carring on the War in the back Provinces next Campaign, a Defign is formed of providing in the Spring Veflels fufficient to tranfport a confiderabe Body of Men direflly to the River St. Lawrence ; and that it is the general Opinion of the Officers there, that one Campaign in this Way will make us Mafters of Quebeck, and, in confequence, of all Canada ; .whereas the prefent Marnner of carrying on the War among thick Woods, where afingle Indian can fire his Piece without Dilcovery, may linger on without Effe& for many Ycars. March 3. The French king, in his letter to his daughter the dutchefs of Parma, on his recovery from the late accident, exprefled himfelf in the following maaner, ¢ The wound in my body is healed ; but fo ¢« deep a wound is left on my mind, that I would ¢ willingly part with life to efface fo great a blot from ¢ the annals of my reign.’ The right hon. the houfe of lords, after examining every member of the court martial upon oath yefter- day, unanimoufly rejeCted the bill relating to admiral Byng, and ordered their proceedings upon it to be forthwith printed and publifhed. A French man of war 30 guns and 280 men, was feot from Toulon to Malta, in quelt of captain Fortu- natos Wright, who in the channel of Malta engaged the Frenchmen, killed 130 of his men, and obliged him to fhear off to refit at Malta. To the aworthy merchants and citizens of London. ¢ Gentlemen, ‘Mr. Byng has in the moft folemn manner been tried, couviCted and condemnedgby the proper legal court martial. All" the unprecedented fters which have becn taken to raife doubts about the fewtence, have only confirmed it. The twelvejudges have voanimoufly declared it to bt a legal fentence. When the lajv has fo pofitively determined this negleét of fihting to\e a capital crimeé, and we all now fo masences of it, who can pretend to his is not a conteft be- etween an injured na- aetrayed them. If he, letthem be gl ed. soed ina elax the difcipline ofournavy ? Itmatters not to us whether this man or thatis minifter. If our abmirals and colo- nels are to refufe to fight where their duty calis them, this nation is ruined : and it will be too Jate to call them to an account when the next {hall run away from Plymouth, under pretence of covering Port/month. *¢ His mzjefty hasbeen gracioufly pleafed to promife us, that he will not fpare the guilty, and it is he only that can redrefs our grievances. Though the throne were befet by advocates for the criminal, yet his ma- jefty’s ears are always open to- the cry of his peopie : To him therefore let us peution forjultice, and the exe- cution of a fentence, upon which our very being, as a nation, may hereafter very poffibly depend.” All the tranfports are now in the Downs, and with the whole fleet, wait only for a favourable wind to pro- cecd from thence to Cork, the place of gencral réa- dezvous, A print is privately loldat the Hague, which repre- fents the emprefs queen in a coach, the French king on the coach box, and the elettor of Saxony in a Polith drefs behind the coach as a footman. The coach - comes to a gate where the king of Pruffia ftands cen- try. He afks the queen, Whether {he is driving ? She anfwers, my coachman wilil tell you. The coachman fays, I am driviog her into a flough. Thea drive on, fays the centry. « Wednefday admiral Holburne, and this day general Hopfon, fet out for Portfmouth, in order to proceed with the fleet and forces to'America, after joining the tranfports at Cork. Yeiterday were fhipped for New England 10,0001b, of gun powder, and 38 Cwt. of lead and lead fhot: This day were fhipped for Virginia 6500 Ib. of gun- powder, and 8o Cwt. of iron : hkewife 5oo Cwt. of iron ordnance for New York, zo Cwt. of iron, and 8o Cwt. of lead. March 5. On Thurlday Lord Charles Hay, Major General of his Majefty’s Foices in America under Lord Luoudon, fet o6t for PoitiniUutl, in order to embark for America.—We hear that Lord Howe is going a Volunteer in the American Expedition, and fet out for Portfmouth Yefterday.—We hear feveral Firethips are ordered to be fitted out with all Expedition.—The very defirable Attempt which was expected to be made this Seflion to reftore triennial Parliaments, it is {aid, will be poftponed to next Year. We hear that feveral important Pofts will be difpo- fed of when the Parliament rifes, to thofe who have diftinguifhed themfelves as true Patriots, March 8. Itis now generally believed, that the fen- tence on admiral Byng will be putin exgcution on Monday the 14th current. There are 250 marines on board, near half of them on duty at a time; when night comes on they double that guard of the ftern gal- leries, and every five miuntes call to one another, fay - ing, All is well: and this holds till morning. *Tis {aid that Admiral Byng, in his prient unhappy Situation, behaves in a truly decent and Chrithian- like manner, being quite compofed and refigned to the Will of Providence. © His Mornings are fpent in Atsof Devotion, having two Rev. Divines to affiit him there- in; at Dinner he refrefhes himfelf very moderattly with a few of his Friends, and then retires to Medita- tion and Prayer; at Tea Time he enjoys his Frends again, and withdraws till Supper, and after eating fpa- ringly, goesearly to Bed. His Company are two Nep- hews and thiee Friends, Itis confidently faid,, that Erquiry will be made into the Condu@t of three Gentlemen of Rank in the Army, in Regard to Minorca. Saturday Morning 130000 1. Sterl. in Silver Coin was fent to Portfmouth under a proper Guard. It is to be embarked on board his Majefty’s Ship the Newark, bound for Americas and is for the Ufe of the Forcés in North America, and thofe going thither. The following are fzid to be the queftious puttothe members of the court martial for the trial of admiral Byng, on theirexamination before the Loufe of lords. 1. Do you know of any undue Infiuence before your giving fentence ! 2. Do you believe the fentence to be unjuft ? 3. Whether they had any Thing to diicover that might be of confequence to the nation, or might in- duce his Majefty to mercy ? 4. Whether they defired the bill to pafs ? Asd that eleven in the court martial an{wered in the negative to all the queftions, and only two anfwered Yes, as to the laft queftion. We hear the Lords of the Admiralty have given the Nums. 33 Gz e BE Command of the Princefs Amelia, a 74 Gun Ship, launched Yefterday, to Capt. Taylor of the Badger Sloop, as a rewara for his gallant Behaviour, ard an LEncouragement to other Commanders to do their Dary. The commons bave granted 48.9261. to defray the experce of four regiments on the Irifh eftabliiment in North America for 1757. Late laft night the houfe agreed to the amendments on the militia bill, and or- dered it to be ingroft. : We hear that the Centurion and other men of war, appointed for the Nova Scotia flation, have reccived orders for failing on or before the 15th inftant if the wind permits, Admiral Weft; with 14 fail of the line, was {poke with about 20 leagues off Cape Finifterre. Admiral Holbourn came to Portfmouth laft night, and will foon fail for lreland, and then to America. The Tranfports, are arrived from the Downs, under the convoy of the Oxford. Portfmouth, March 7.
