Extrafi of a Letter from Portfmouth, March 15, 1757, <« Orders being given for all the Men of War at Spithead, to fend their Boats, on Monday Morning the 14th of March, with the Captain and all the Officers of each Ship, accompanied by a Party of Marines in each Boat under Arms, to attend the Execution of Mr. Byng ; they, in Purfuance of that Order, rowed from Spithead, and made the Harbour a little after Eleven o'Clock with the ntmoft Difficuity and Danger, it blow- ing a prodigions hard Gale, the Wind at W. N. W, and ebbing Water, it was the more difficult to get up fo high as the Monarque lay, on board which Ship the Admiral fuffered. Notwithftanding it blew fo hard, and the Sea ran very high, and with great Violence, there was a prodigious Number of Boats round the- Ships on the Ouifide of the Men of Wars Boats, which kept off all others. Not a Soul was {uffered to be on board except thole belonging to the Ship. But thofe Ships that lay any Way near her were greatly crouded Wwith Spetators, all their Shrouds and Tops being full, wltho’ 1t was then difficalt to fee any Thing on board the Monarque. Mr. Byng walked out of the Great «abbin to the Quarter deck, where he fuffered, on the Larboard Side, a few Minutes before Twelve 0’Clock, zecompanied by 2 Clergymen, who attended him dur- ing hisConfinement, and two Gentlemen, his Relations. e was drefled in alight gray Coat, white Waiftcoat, i whits Swockians and. g large white Wig, and had in each Hand 2 whitz Handkerchief. He threw his Hat on the Deck, kneeled onit, tied one Handkerchief over his Eyes, and dropped the other as a Signal, on which aVolley from fix Marines was fired, five of whofe Bullets went throvgh bim, and he was, in an Inftant, no more. He infilted on not having any Thing before his Face, but was greatly prefled to it, being perfuaded it was not otherwife decent, and that the Marines might be intimidated from taking proper Aim. His coming out of the Cabbir, which | particularly obferved, from the Stillnefs and Attention of all on board, could not be two Miuates to his Death. In fhort, he died with great Compofure, without the lealt Sign of Timidity, and the Moment the Mufkets went off, there was a blue Pendant thrown out at the Fore topmait head, which continued flying about five Minutes, and was then firuck ; on which ail the Men of War's Boats went off to their refpetive Ships.” ¢ The Ramillies, the Ship the Admiral had in the Mediterranean, was riding at her Moorings in the Har- bour, and about half an Hour before he fuffered, the broke hgr-Mooring Chain, and only held by her Bridle, which is looked on asa wonderful Incident by People who do not confider the high Wind at that Time. <« Inclofed you havea Copy of the Paper, delivered by the Admiral jull before his Death, which hasbeen printed and given away here.” A Copy of @ Paper, delivered by the Honourable Admi- ral Byne, to William Brough, E/¢; Marfbal of the High Court of ddmiralty, immediately before bis Death, baving firft jpoke as follows : 'S [ R, *+'Thefe are my Thoughts on this Occafion : I give them to gao. that you may authenticate them, and preve being publifh’d, that migy ave givena Copy to 4 AL AR ng [ from the vi- wribher Ma- m a Life ice done Nuwms. 35 GAZETTE PRGSO RIBSIVIGVEITABLIDERT LIRS Foreign and Domeflick. to the Happine[s and Service of my Country 5 but cannot refign my jull Claim to the faithful D:icharge of my Duty, according to the beft of my Fudgment, and the utmofi Ex- ertion of my Ability, for his Majefly's.
