CONTINUING LIFE WITHOUT MATING Yale Demonstrates Unus Zoologilnl Experiment New Haven, Nov. 23 UP—The so- | to Hartford-Empire Co. Method and | called “creatures that never grow ©old," at the Osborn zoological labora- tory, Yale University, are this month ; entering the middle of the twenty- first year of what is probably the most remarkable scientific demon- stration ever made of the power of life to reproduce itself. They are a dozen tiny, single- celled animals that live in drops of Leef extract on glass slides, on a flat-topped table. They have proved that in their case at least life can continue and the race multiply, without the cy- cles of mating and old age. Before this experiment the necessity of mat- ing to continue life had been con- sidered universal in nature, ‘Twenty-one years ago Dr. Lorande L. Woodruff, professor of protozo- ology at Yale, took from common ditch water a single-cell animal named Paramecium, which repro- duges about once a day by dividing into two complete adult animals. Mating had been an apparent riecessity with these animals. But each day when the paramecium di- vided in the laboratory Dr. Woodruff removed one animal, so that mating never occurred. There are now more than 13,000 generations from this parent para- meclum. That many generations would require elapse of many thou- sand years. The existence -of the paramecia through so many gener- ations, with unimpaired vitality, without aid of fertilization, Profes- sor Woodruff says, shows the inher- ent power of living matter to con- tinue life. An idea of this power appears in mathematical calcula- tions showing that if food could have been supplied to keep them all alive these animals alone long ago would have filled the known uni- verse, The research indicates the tre- mendous effectiveness of means whereby nature prevents such life forces from multiplying out of pro- portion, Tests showed that though fertllization is not a primary attri- bute of reproduction, mating speeds up the rate. Professor Woodrufft long ago closed his proof that fertilization was not needed to prevent senile de- cay, but keeps the line of paramecia partly because scientists all over the United States, and in Europe, ecnd to Yale for spacimens of these old- est of pedigreed antmals. Bee through a microscope as it #wims In the crystal clear labora- tory lquid, a paramecium almost cxactly resembles a blimp, and its progress is suggestive of a blimp buffeted by winds that frequently turn it over completely, List of.
