STUDENT NURSES 10 VISIT HOMES Girls at Hospital to Get Train- ing Under Miss Golby Student nurses at the New Brit- ain General hospital will get two months actual practice in district nursing on the nursing staft of the New Britain Visiting Nurse associa- tion, if plans agreed upon today are ratified. The plan was discussed today by Dr. T. E. Reeks, superintendent of the hospital, and Miss Rachel Colby, directress of the Visiting Nurse association. Before it' can be put into operation it must receive the final ratification of the board of di- rectors of the latter association. This ratification is merely a matter of form and the plan probably will go into effect in a short time. Under the program as laid out, each nurse in the senior class will get two months training with the Visiting Nurses. Two students at & time will be released by the hos- pital. They will be under the direct charge of Miss Colby but as students in the training school will be under the final authority of hospital offi- cials at all times. This plan is expected, according to ' Dr. Recks, to help round out the| training of a nurse to such an ex- tent that when she does graduate, she will not enter her duties of pri- | vate nursing as a newcomer facing greater responsibilities but rather as one with experience, obtained under expert supervision, who will have learned how to face and handle the | added responsibilities. In addition it will enhance the work of the Visiting Nurse associa- tion to such an extent that the as- sociation will actually have two ad- ditional nurses without any increase in operating expenses. Since the work of the Visiting Nurse associ- ation has grown to such an extent that an additional appropriation from the United Community corpor- ation at the next community chest drive seemed necessary, this will de- crease the total amount of the fin- crease needed, if any is asked. Miss Harriet Leck, directress of the Hartford Visiting Nurse asso- ciation, spoke at the Rotary meet- ing of the training school today and told the nurses that the plan, now in operation in Hartford is success- ful there. The student nurse on the staff of the Visiting Nurse associa- tion there is considered an asset and not a liability, she said. The fundamental qualifications of a trained nurse and especially a visiting nurse, Miss Leck explained, are genuine love of people and sym- pathetic understanding of human failings. James 8. North, president of the training school, presided at the meeting, which was the second since last spring. This was Mr. North's first time to preside this season, his place being taken at the meeting two weekd' ago by C. F. Bennett, resident of the board of directors of the hospital. Going down Webster Hill, the foot brakes were found to be in good condition, but on Rockwell avenue the emergency brake was tried and ; would not hold. Charges of driving with defective brakes and lights were preferred and Sowa was re- | leased in bonds for arraignment in court today. After pleading not guilty, Sowa explained that it was a borrowed car, but the reason he did not stop at once was that he did not see the officer. His companion told him someone had called to him, so he stopped, which he could have done sooner. He said it was dark at that point but Judge Roche asked Officer Carroll it it was not true that a street light 1s located near the police signal box and the officer replied affirmatively.
