D, June 24 (P— With his report on conditions in the Philippines in the hands of President Coolidge, Governor Gen- eral Leonard Wood of the islands rested at the summer White House today from his long trip which plainly had affected him. A series of accidents before leav- ing Manila and on the ocean trip td® this continent had undermined the general's usual robust constitu- tion and when he arrived at Cus- ter, S. D, he had to be assisted to the automobile which brought him to the state game lodge. After a long conference with the president, General Wood was in- vited to remain overnight and he cancelled a previous decision to re- board his special car for the trip to Washington so as to be able to take advantage of the bracing mountain air in this locality and a good rest before resuming his Journey. There was no comment on the governor-general’s visit either from himself or from the White House. Members of his party declared Mr. Wood expected to return to his post in September. Although Gen- eral Wood seemed extremely tired | and worn out from his long trip | augmented by pain from his in-| juries, his physician, Captain Lind- | say Fletcher, who also made the trip from Manila, said the general was in good physical condition. South Dakotans who have known General Wood for years in various roles on many sides expressed re- gret that his disability might pre- vent a more extended tour of the state than now seems likely. South Dakota was the first state to for- mally propose him for the presi- dency when, early in the spring ot 1920 the republican voters pledged him their support at the Chicago nominating convention at a time they also pledged themselves to Mr. Coolidge for the vice-presi- dency. Years ago General Wood came into South Dakota as a surgeon in the army and participating in some of the Indian campaigns in the Da- kotas.
