‘CORPUS CHRISTY FEAST IN SPAIN “Processions Being Held in Every Village and Hamlet Madrid,. June . 16 (UP)—The "‘Corpus Christi” celebrations. took place todzy throughout Spain. This restival in honor of the Consecrated Host, was one of the most impor tant and solemn feats of the year here. In every town, the population, anxious of demonstrating religious | iove and devotion, formed proces- slons which, from the point of view of their ingenuity, richness and di- versity, presented an unforgetable spectacle, especially in the roman- tis and historical cities of Castille and Andalucia. ‘The processions with thelr bands, their sculptured and decorated fig- ures, were followed by a muiltitude whose faith always impresses even Cathollc foreigners. During the defiles through weal- thy and poor quarters, wide and narrow streets, fell the usual show- er of flowers, mostly roses and strongly perfumed pinks, thrown from all balconies, by Spanish fem- inine beauties dressed in their typl- cal eostume. This year again, the “Corpus Christi” processions will be remem- bered as beautiful feasts, especially in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Cor- doba and Toledo, which possess the most valuable ‘“custodias.” Some of these “custodias,” which play such an important part in the processions, are unforgetable: Reli- relics, often taking the form star, sustained by a stem and base, made of gold and silver, as a symbol of pureness, they are con- sidered sacred objects by the fer- vent Catholics, who prostrate them- selves in their presence; in the pro- cessions, they are always surround- ed by representatives of the church, and cautiously guarded, although no one would dare touch them, fearing the Holy punishment. One of the features of the “Cor- pus Christ” in Granada this year, was the representation of the “autos sacramentales,” dramatic plays in honor of the Holy Sacrament, in the fashion of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some were staged on carriages, similar to those used at the time.
