100 WAIFS SAVED JUST BY MUSIC Russian Children Disciplined by Musicians 1 Moscw, June 10 (#—A cultural and edcational achievement — the 1escuirg and discipling of 100 “Bez- prizoris,” or homeless waifs—has been accomplished by Professor JacobAnissimovitch Belogortzev, a nativ of Veronej, southeast Russia.! Scees of these children set adrift by wars of civil war and famine 10ar the street of nearly every city in Russia. They are addicted to cvey vice and crime. The greater parof them are drunkards, drug- vidms or pickpockets. Efforts of th government to reclaim them hve been in vain. They have per- | stently run away from refuges | 4d homes provided for them, pre- srring life in the streets. Belogortzev, however, has taken n hand a hundred of the wretched | youngsters, taught them music and organized out of them a string or- chestra, whose ability is winning acknowledgement. The formation of the orchestra started in 1920, when Red troops drove away the White Guards from the Kuban region. Professor Belo- | gortzev was there, giving music leasons to cossacks. He was popu- | lar and every day as he went to give | his lessons, ‘he was besieged by a | crowd of ragged, filthy children who | hegged him to teach them music. | This is how the ground for the or- | chestra was laid. For four years the professor, deprived of any help from outside, carried on his In- structions. Only in 1924, after demonstrating his orchestra before | the authorities of the Kuban dis- | trict, was he granted a subsidy of 4 thousand dollars. The orchestra consists of chil- dren ranging from 6 to 14 years. ‘The professor hopes to increase the number to 150 and to form a brass band of 60 young musicians. Clary has been a member of the Editorial Board of “The Polytech- nic,” the students publication and treasurer of the Nutmeg club.
