LIQUOR SALES AT WINDSOR ONTARIO, ARE AVERAGING ABOUT $13,000 A DAY Too Early to See Any Effects, Good or Bad, Ac- cording to Those Ad- ministering Province’s New Wet Law. Windsor, Ont. June 10 (UP)— Atter 10 days of government liquor | sale, Windsor is buying almost as much daily as it did the first few days after prohibition ended, but it isn't making so much fuss about it. Last week an average of 60 per- sons stood in line constantly in front of each of the two govern- ment liquor stores here. This week the average has been between 20 and 30. The line is there through- out the hours the store is open, and a staff of clerks inside is kept busy wrapping bottles. Sales $13.000 a Day Sales the first two days the stores were open last week were estimated unofficially at $15,000 a day. This week sales have averaged $13,000, and there was every indication the total would continue to hover around that mark. Arrests on charges of drunken- ness have fallen off remarkably since the sale of liquor started. The | daily average under prohibition was\ six, but since government sale of | liquor to be consumed only in homes or hotel rooms started, only one or two intoxication arrests a day have been made. No permits to tourists have been issued here yet. Officials hoped to start issuing them within a few more days. Predictions on what effect that will have on general 4rinking conditions differed widely. No Ofticial Opinion For the most part, persons in au- thorlty refused to express any, opinion on the effect of government lquor sale. It is too early to see | any results, good or bad, they b"‘, lieved. Mayor Cecil E. Jackson apd the chief of police both declined | comments, but Malcolm G. Camp-| bell, président of the moderation | league, an important factor in the campaign to end prohibition, praised | the: rasults highly. | Figures show a dec¢rease in drunk- | enness,” Campbell said. There has| been no disorder, and the law has beén as successful as {its sponsors belidved it would be.” Bootleggers were understood to be | continuing to operate sucéessfully | despite the government liquor sale. ‘i The drinking public seemed well satisfied with the new law,’ except that demands for more liquor stores were expressed in many quarte The complicated procedire for get- | ting liquor at the stores has caused some protésts. The purchaser has to go to one counter to flll out a purchase slip showing the amount of liquor he wants and.its cost; to | another to have his permit examined | and certified; to a third to pay for‘ his purchase, and to a tourth to 59!\ he liguor. !
