TRL, 612, | WEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 1021. | MANY LOCAL PEOPLE AT NORMAL SCHOOL APPROPRIATION HEARING AT CAPIT 0L Principal Marcus White and‘ Others Tell of Need of. New Buildings to Traini State’s Teachers. . (Special to the Herald). ‘ Hartford, April 29—One of the best organized hearings of the present leg- islative year was held yesterday at the capitol in Hartford before the appropriations committee for the $760,000 grant for a new Normal school in the Stanley Quarter of New Britain. Those appearing for the | grant were led by Senators Bakewell and Challenger of the legislative com- ! mittee on education, and by Marcus White, principal of the Normal school in New Britain. Appearing for Bill Among those appearing for the bill were Dean Jones of Yale, and the | personnel of the state board of educa- tion. The New Britain people present were Representatives Covert and Ru- therford, W. E. Attwood, A. Gorbach, Joseph Halloran, Edward Kilburn, and others. N. B. Logical Place. It was hrought out at the hearing that New Britain was the geographi- cal center of Connecticut and - that there werg more applications for ad- mission to the New Britain Normal school than to any other Normal school in the state. It was also point- ; ed out that the schools in Williman- factory inspector hzu] gone over the i premises. Commrittee Action. Senator Edward Hall, chairman the appropriations committee that the committee might take matter up at the executive session, but there is so much other buxinefls on the calendar for action that a de- cision might not be reached for a few weeks yet. As soon as the com- mittee decides, the matter will be reférred to both branches of the leg- islature for action. of s:\id the CHIC BROWN LOSES, Wallingford, April 29.—Tracy Fer- guson of Wallingford won the ref- eree’s decision over the once-famous | Chic Brown of New Haven last night in their eight-round bout before the West End A. C. in the old Wallingford armory. The eight sessions were chucked full of action. Both boys slugging away at random, Chic hav- ing somewhat the bunk on Ferguson because of his greater ring-knowl- edge. ———— tic and Danbury were not full while |« the school in New Britain was forced to turn away applicants. : Bakewell's Argument. Benator Bakewell of New Haven in his appeal for the appropriation, said that the state forced the parents to educate their children and had un- dertakén to furnish the teachers in order to carry out the law. In the next year there will be 800 vacancies in the teaching staff of the state, and a new Normal school is the only rem- edy for the situation. The Old Normal School. One of the main points brought out | at the hearing was the fact that If the old Normal school on Walnut Hill in New Britain was a private corpor- ation, it would have been closed as being unfit for a school or facto This dec n_ v hed When your recipe calls for sugar, make sure you get the best results Sweeten it u CARMOTE FLOOR VARNISH “Save the suface and yausavndl Civiog Desutirel Lttetions of Gherry, Walnut, Uo:h?-.-'a. also with stain coml mm.mamu,mm Lt O-k.
