New London, Dec. Joseph J. Fuller 85, about the last of the remaining whaling captains who formerly went out from this port in whaling days died at his home here Thursday evening. He put in over 60 years on Whaling voyages in the vicinity of Desolation island far south of the Antarctic circle and was once shipwrecked in the Antarctic where he remained for nearly a year before being rescued. When the Civil war broke out he enlisted in the navy and served on Admiral Farra- gut’s flagship in Mobile Bay and on the Mississippl. After giving up whaling he was appointed keeper of the lighthouse at Stonington Break- water and he retired several years ago. He leaves a widow two daughters nnd two sons.
