Lieutenant John Stokes, who was discharged three weeks ago from the British army and appointed to or- ganize the defense of police headguar- ters in Ireland, was killed during an attack on the Newport barracks in County Tipperary. Every hamlet, village snd town in Ulster had some kind of a celcbration, or Orangemen's Day, and reports from a wide area were that the day passed quietly, Belfast and other sections heavily guarded by soldiers. Inscriptions on hanners across the Belfast streets denounced the Sinn Fein, and Sir Edward Carson, the Ul- ster leader, said in a speech that the people of the south of Ireland wouid of their own volition have to hang those guilty of political murders be- fore Ulster would even consider unity. The Orangemen's parade had 25, 000 in line with silk banners depict. ing the early history of Ulster and numerous pictures of King William on his white horse crossing the Boyne. Rev. George Timmon, supreme head of the Orange order in the United States, speaking at Fidaghy park, Belfast, said: “It is said that three million Trish are going to shake the British em- pire. Well, we have ten million Irish in America and they are not going to shake the American republic.” were — A daughter, born to Mr. of 236 Ma employed vihill El Madelyn Rhea, has and Mrs. Leon Toczko le street. July 13.— Frank Smith, aged 19, who pleaded guilty of attacking a Vassar alumnae who returned for the commencement exercises in June, was sentenced to 20 vears in Sing Sing prison by County Judge Charles W. Arnold yes- terday afternoon. This is the maxi- mum penaity. Smith was in tears as Judge Arnold pronounced sentence. “It is unfortunate that your age should be sent to state prison,” said Judge Arnold, “but there are no mitigating circumstances and I am going to give you the full pen- aity.” Smith, whose home is in Marble- town, Ulster county, was arrested on June 16, for an assault upon the Vas- sar graduate, which occurred on the morning of June 8, on Sunset Hill, where she had gone to spend a tew a boy of hours before comimencement exer- cises in the chapel. He ran out of the bushes and struck her in the eyes, felling her to the ground, and con- tinued to rain blows upon ‘her face and head. y Finally the man ran away, becom- ing frightened, and although his vic- tim was able to give a good descrip- tion of him, he was not captured un- til a week after, when he accosted two girls near the college grounds. He was arrested and accused of the crimme of June 8. At first he denied his guilt, but later he broke down and confessed. The Vassar girl remaiped in the infirmary at the college for more than a week. She identified Smith by his picture as soon as it was shown to her.
