Hammond, 185 Church street, New Haven, ran @own James H. Clark, aged sixty, one of the most prominent blacksmiths and fraternalists of the city, the vic- tim dying early this morning. Dr. Hammond was today held under $3,000 bonds upon a technical charge of manslaughter. Though the finding of Coroner John J. Phelan who conducted an inquest this morning will probably absolve Hammond from oriminal responsibil- ity, clivil suit will be begun by the family who have retained Judge Frank L., Wilder- \ Hvidence presented at the hearing today disclosed that the doctor wos backing his car from the garage door , Of the Fairfield Auto company on John street at a slow speed. No warning bell was sounded by the gar- age as prescribed by law. Though the victim asserted no warning had been sounded, Dr, Hammond declares he blew 'his horn. The car had backed two feet beyond the doorway = when Hammond heard a cry. He stopped the car but from the rear glass of the limousine he saw nobody. He again applied the power and heard Clark £ry from bemeath the machine, “You have run over me.” Examination of the victim disclosed no serious external injury.. Though under the treatment of Dr. T. L. El- lis of this city, employed by Dr. Ham- mond, Clark expired this morning. Evidence before the coroner indicates that death was primarily due to heart failure with shock from the ac- cident as a contributory cause- # Dr. Hammond gave himself up to the police and secured bonds through Harry D.
