At \Least He 'Has Best Wishes of This Woman. ‘Washington, Nov. 4—*“What is the election news please?’ a woman, speaking over the telephone, asked a young man busy tabulating results in a Washington newspaper office yes- terday. “McCall has carried Massachusetts, Stanley has carried Kentucky, prohibi- tion is beaten in Ohio, suffrage in New York, Pennsylvania and Massachu- setts, while Tammany: seems to have won in New York,” was the reply. “What is Mr. Tammany running for?” was the next question. For a moment the young man sought for words, and then, realizing that he had to complete his tabula- tion, gave it up. “For mayor,” he answered, and the woman thanked him sweetly, ex- pressed the hope that Mr. Tammany would make a good mayor, and rang off. P. and Democrats Pleased With Result of Recent Elections New York, Nov. 4.—Charles D. Hilles, chairman of the republican national committee, last night issued a statement in which he said: “The result of yesterday's election must be anything but gratifying to the national administration. The contest in the democratic state of Maryland is so very close that the result will be in doubt until decided by the official canvass. In the democratic state of Kentucky, where national questions were lugged in by the democrats to avold a drubbing, republicans have shown their old time form. We have carried Cincinnati by the largest plu- rality ever given a candidate in that city. ¥ Big Republican Victories. “The republicans have retained con- trol of the legislatures in New York and New Jersey; have elected local officers in up-state New York and all officers in Philadelphia. They have swept Massachusetts by pluralities ranging from 10,000 to 30,000, electing all state officers and 160 republican members of the legislature against seventy-nine democrats. sional district in Pennsylvania and three in New York, one of which, the Twenty-third of New York, has been held by a democrat. Rebuke for Wilson. “It is significant that the issues dis- cussed in Massachusetts and Twenty-third of New York by men of national note were wholly those aris- ing out of the domestic policies of the national administration. Bennett, elected in the Twenty-third New York, made the protective tariff his keynote and he ran 11,000 ahead of candidates in the same territory. “The Boston Post contended that the national administration was on trial and that the election of McCall in the policies of President Wilson. cannot point with pride and pretend to be complimented by the success of Tammany Hall in securing control of local New York offices and aiding in the defeat of the New York constitu- tion.” Democratic Statement. and pinch. The ‘Washington, Nov. 4—A statement bands of steel and rubber that chafe }issued last night from the headquar- ters of the democratic national com- mittee commenting on the results of vesterday’s elections, said: “The results yesterday show that while the republicans and Bull Moose have gotten together in some states, the Democracy has made large gains from the progressive ranks. This is notably true in Massachusetts, which state first official returns are democratic guberna- torial candidate, Governor Walsh, made a wonderful race. He polled the largest vote ever given a democrat in the state, while Mr. McCall, the re- publican candidate, ran way behind the normal republican vote given par. ty nominees in recent years. The boast of the republicans in Massachusetts that they would carry the state by from 25,000 to 40,000 majority re- mains unfulfilled. * Gratifying for Democrats. “There were three state election @ results yesterday where governors were chosen. Pleased With Ohio. “One of the very gratifying results yesterday was the defeat of the leg- islation submitted by Governor Willis and the republican leaders in Ohio to gerrymander the congressional dis- tricts of the state so as to give the democrats only five congressional dis- tricts.” FRANCE THANKS WILSON. ‘Washington, Nov. 4.—Ambassador Jusserand called at the White House vesterday and presented to President Wilson the thanks of France for in- terceding with Germany in behalf of Countess de Belleville and Mlle. A Physician’s Advice on Cause and Cure. A New York Physician who has made a special study of stomach and intestinal diseases says that nearly all intestinal troubles, as well as many diseases of the vital organs, are di- rectly traceable to a deranged condi- | tion of the stomach. This in turn | is due about nine times out of ten | to excessive acidity, commonly termed i sour stomach or heartburn, which not only irritates and inflames the delicate lining of the stomach but also may set up gastritis and in a large majority of cases gastric ulcers are accompnied by hyperacidity. It is interesting to note that he con- demns the use of patent medicines, and practically all medical treatment that is designated to act upon the stomach lining, stating that the best results are obtained by the use of a simple antacid which acts upon the contents of the stomach and neu- tralizes the acidity of the food thus removing the source of the trouble. As an antacid he prescribes ordinary bisurated magnesi He contends that it is as foolish to treat the stomach itself as it would be for a man who stepped cn a tack to rub | linament on the foot without first | removing the Remove the tack and the foot wiil heal itself—neutra- lize tho acid and the stomach troubles will disappear. Irritating medicine: and medical treatments are usele <0 long as the contents of the stomach remains acid; remove the acidity and there will bo no need for medicine— the inflamed lining of the stomach will then heal itself. Sufferers from acidity, sour stomach and heartburn j should get a small bottle of bisurated magnesia from their druggist, and take a teaspoonful in a quarter of a glass of hot or cold water after each meal, repeating in fifteen minutes, if necessary, this being the dose which the doctor has found most efficacious in all cases. = | gratifying to the national democracy, | for all of these states have been in | S | FRAUD IN KENTUCKY, Chatrman Galvin Alleges That the | Ballot Boxes Were Stolen and Stuffed by Democrats.
