Vienna, March 26.—Forty tousand letters, in more than forty languages and dialects, to be read daily: secret messages written in cipher with in- visible inks to be discovered and puzzeled out: all manner of questions | from distracted parents about the whereabouts of their sons to be an- swered: thousands of complaints from Austrians regarding their treatment in foreign detention camps and pri- sons to be investigated. These are some of the duties of the censors—between 200 and 300 of them—who form the personnel of the censorship bureau of the Austrian em- pire which is located in the war min- istry, and which has been dubbed “The Organized Babel’ Both in- coming and outgoing letters have to be scrutinized carefully, and the var- jety of dialects in the empire, in ad- dition to the large number of tongues spoken by the Austrlan prisoners, make it necessary to Keep the largest bureau in Europe.
