Motoring Department: While adjusting one of the bear- ings in one of the rear wheels I had occasion to take a bearing out, and in one of the balls. Will Learing to run without P. K. You should replace the lost ball without delay, taking particular care to obtain the exact size, so that all the balls of the bearing will be the szme. If you do not replace the lost bull the additional strain put upon the others may cause the cutting of the ball Tace. When this starts. the life of the whole bearing will be very short. doing so lost re the Carburetor Adjusting. Motoring Department: I have a car with a carburetor which will not run slowly. It seems to work well enough with the throttle opened to pull the car, but that is all. The engine seems to be in good condition. What do yvou suggest is the trouble ? i G. H Many things prevent a motor from throttling to low speeds. Usually the trcuble is in the carburetor adjust- ment. At slow engine speed the air valve should be closed. If you feel the carburetor is right then test for air leaks in the manifold. A slight leak in the manifold or one of the manifold gaskets will cause your trouble. The spark gap at the plug should not exceed 1-32 of an inch. Each cylinder should have strong and equal compression. Chipped Gear Teeth, Motoring Department: I have a 1913 car, and there are three or four teeth of the bevel gear that are chipped: they are not and the car seems to have just as much power as ever: the pinion is in good condition. Please advise me if vou think I had better have a new gear or not. E. B P If the teeth of the gear do not chip any further it is hardly advis- able to change. You must figure. however, that this defective gear will tend to spoil the pinion gear. Also, that any addition chips may work themselves between the teeth of the driving gears and do further damage. Would suggest that the part in aues- tion be inspected once in a while, and if it shows signs of additional wear or has a tendency to chip further, that it be replaced with a new one, Aluminum vs, Steel. I am a reader of vour columns and wish to ask the following question through your motoring department The three bearing caps on my crank shaft are cast aluminum and all are Eroken. Are the cast aluminum caps stronger than steel caps would be and which would crack the easier? i In timing the valves when should the intake valve clo. READER. The aluminum caps are not as strong as steel caps of equal dimen- sions. The latter kind will not crack so easily if properly made. Usually the intake valve closes about thirty-five degrees after bottom center. This varies with the type of motor—that is, whether it is a high- speed or slow-speed type. Engine Noises. Motoring Department: Will you kindly advise me in your next issue the following: had since March and same runs fine, Yut lately T noticed when running and changing from low to high a sort of clattering noise in the engine. I thought perhaps it was in the valves, or might be a loose poston. I notice the clatter very much in running slow. I have not looked into the engine, but thought T would get your ideas of what the noise was Thanking vou in advance for your kind information on the matter SETRE (S Perhaps you are driving with spark too far advanced. When running in low gear the motor tury over fast and the advanced spark suitable, However, when you go into high gear the speed of the motor is greatly re- duced and the overadvanced spark would cause the knock. Exce: e carborization of the ¢ nders would also add to this condition. It s possible that the mechanisim control- ling the spark advance has hecome disarranged and needs readjustment. PAIN GONE! It is our belief that this car fixes— at $1395—the highest price you should pay for a six-cylinder car of supreme value. In this announcement we cannot begin to describe the car. You must come to see it in order to appreciate what a really great achievement has been accom- plished by the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company. Bring along any engineer, any automobile expert, that you know. Let him go over the car carefully and give you his opinion. Beyond any question of doubt he will confirm our statement that this is an epoch-making car—a car that will establish a new understanding of “value” in the six field. A Big Car . Note that this is a big car—124 inches of wheelbase—meaning luxur- ious, roomy comfort for every passen- ger. This is not a “make-shift” seven- passenger automobile. It seats seven full-grown persons without crowding and without cramping. Two auxiliary scats fold into the back of the front seat when not in use. The body de- sign is a masterpiece in coach build- ir_xg-—;he last word in grace and dis- tinction. Bosch Ignition Everyone concedes that Bosch is the standard ignition of the world. You will notice that the Paige “Six-46" is equipped with this world-famous system and you will then begin to understand the meaning of Paige “super-value.” Alive with Power The 3Y; by 5% Paige-Continental motor takes this car fairly flying over the hills. It is alive with power—re- sponsive power that obeys instantly the slightest movement of the throttle. Sixty miles an hour is play for the Paige “Six” and it slackens its pace to two miles on high gear when you want it. Perfect carburetion is in- sured by the unexceled Rayfield Car- buretor. Lubrication Efficient lubrication is absolutely essential to the life of any motor car. The Paige “Six” is lubricated by a plunger pump which forces a steady stream of oil to all main bearings, pis- tons and cylinder walls are lubricated by splash from constant level oil in pan. Cork Insert Clutch This is the most expensive clutch construction used in the motor car industry, but it is well worth the many extra thousands of dollars that the Paige Company is obliged to pay. Investigate for yourself the number of high-priced cars using this clutch where cost is not an item. Gray & Davis Equipment Practically all reputable automobile engineers are unanimous in agreeing that the Gray & Davis s ate unit electric s and lightmg system is the most perfect system on the market today. It has been used on the Paige for two years with wonder- ful results, and of course is retained on the new Paige “Six-46." It is the newest, lightest type, and turns over the motor faster than any other crank- ing system. The 90-hour Willard Storage Battery is used. Paige Cantilever Spring Suspension The action of these Cantilever rear springs is little less than lons. The sensation of riding in a Paige “Six” is only to be compared with the easy, undulating motion of a staunch power boat. Cantilever springs make the roughest roads smooth boulevards. And you cannot know how a car should ride until you have had a demonstration in the new Paige “Six.” E have mentioned only a few points of supremacy found in this magnificent car. There are many, but when you stop to weigh them all and think of them all together, there is but one answer—a great “Six,” a truly triumphant Orders Placed Now Insure Prompt Delivery “Six.” MORRIN’S GARAGE On Exhibitton at Hartford Auto Show, Feb. 6th to Feh. 13th. 200 East Main St. New Britain, Tel. 943-2. kgents for New Brifain, Bristol, Plainville and Berlin, ——SEE PAGE 5 Also make it a point to see the famous ‘‘Glenwood-36""— The supreme four-cylinder value of the motor car industry. viously. pany is $50,000, | transactions which had occurred pre- The capital of the Bayshore com- | Eye Testing. 306 MAIN ST.
