He de clared that as a result of the Euro- | pean war Argentina’s imports of man- ufactures had been diminished fully | $100,000,000 and suggested that American aught to supply this de-| mand. The ambassador quoted Argentina | authorities to show that to obtain a foothold in that market, American manufacturers would have to adopt themselves to the business methods in that country. It was pointed out that American commerce suffers in that respect by comparison with German ! commerce, the German plan being to | fulfill all requirements whereas America seeks to impose its own bus- iness methods. The problem of closer commercial relations, the ambassador said, was a practical question and expressed the | belief that it would be solved sooner by a reciprocal study of the commer- | cial methods and characterics of the two countries to that end he urged the creation of a special Argentina-Ameri- ican chamber of commerce. Other speakers included Myron 7. Herrick, former ambassador to France; Dr. B. ¥. Pratt, chief of the | bureau of foreign and domestic com- | merce, and E. A. Filene, vice president of the international congress of cham- | bers of commerce. British Hospital Ship Prevented From Being Sunk. Southampton, via. F., Feb. 5.—All the fieight and most of the bunker coal of the coastal steamer Prospero were thrown overboard before she could floated from submerged ledge upon which she had been forced by : great ice floe off the north coast of Newfoundland last week. Barely coal was left to carry the steamer to the nearest port, where she secured a new supply. The Prospero wags forced to await a favorable wind, which drove the ice off the coast, and has just arrvived here. The vessel sustained considerable damage. The ice is now coming down from Greenland waters in great quantities, covering the grand banks and sweep- ing southward towards the trans- | Atlantic shipping track.
