Barnes And Lott Capture City Doubles Net Title North And South Exhibit Optimism By MERCER BAILEY MIAMI, Fla. —Optimism was high in both camps today as North and South teams got in their final licks of preparation for the college all-star football game in the Or- ange Bowl Christmas night. Coaches Ivy Williamson of Wis- consin and Andy Gustafson of Mi- ami, masterminding the North and South forces respectively, reporteds| both squads in high spirits and fine physical shape. “We're ready,” was the word from both sides. The Yankees,’ who have man- aged to win only one and tie one in six previous Shrine charity games, were even happy about the fact that they are rated seven- point underdogs. “There’s nothing like beating a favorite,” commented Pat Abbruz- zi, Rhode Island halfback. Williamson agreed the Rebels probably rate the favorite’s role. But since there is such a thing as an upset, he wasn’t alarmed by Gustafson’s prediction that the South would win three touchdowns to two. The North probably will rely heavily on a passing attack, punc- tuated by the fullback smashes of All-America Alan Ameche of Wis- consin, In yesterday’s workout, William- son drilled his players about 50-50 on straight T and single-wing of- fenses. He had quarterback Dun- can McDonald of Michigan and halfbacks Carl Norman of West Virginia and Rex Brock of Purdue working with Ameche in the sin- gle-wing unit. Ameche, the nation’s all-time leading ground ganer with a career total of 3,212 yards, did most of the ball carrying. Gustafson, who will use a varia- tion of the “belly” series off the split T as the South’s major at- tack, had Miami quarterback Carl Garrigus, halfbacks Guddy Leake of Oklahoma and Larry Parker of North Carolina and fullback Dick No. 1 unit. The South has concentrated on a running attack in its drills. Connie Mack © Wants Pennant FORT MYERS, Fla. —Cohnie Mack’s big wish for the new year “is that the Kansas City Athletics win the American Leagve pennant, or at least finish in the first divi- sion.” ‘ Still loyal to the teain he man- aged so long at Philadelphia, the arrow-straight baseball leader said he would be on hand at West Palm Beach March 1 to welcome the players when they report for spring training, as has been his long-time custom. He celebrated his 92nd birthday with a quiet dinner at the home of his son Connie Jr. last night. “It looks as if the 100 (year) mark will be easier to reach than Bielski of Maryland working his | Sellers Brothers Fall In Closely Fought Match Bill Barnes and Charlie Lott won the City Doubles Tennis Championship yest- erday afternoon at Bayview Park, as expected, but not after a terrific battle that forced them to call on their finest resources to pull the match out of the fire.
