These sailors were convoyed on their tour by pretty senoritas. All Navy ships don’t make liberty in Havana. To get a preview of Car- denas, Cuban terminal of the new ferry, EPPC (experi- mental patrol craft) 618 re- cently visited that city. EPC 18 was met at the pier by a delegation of Car- denas city brass, The crew BE BOP OR SAMBA? — What's the difference, says R. D. The advent of the Key West-Cuban ferry now allows service people who are transferred to and from the Cuban Station to proceed in their own cars. This method of official travel does not as yet have the approval of the Navy Department. In the past, practically all people entering and leaving Guantanamo Bay did so by military aircraft. The few vehicles that are on the foreign station were taken the eom- plete route by ship. The distance to the Naval base is only 564 miles from the ferry land- ing in Cardenas. The complete route is over a first class road with the exception of the last 60 miles from Santiago to the Guan- tanamo, Naval Station. This sixty- mile stretch is in the process of being improved at the present. Scenic Route The route along the length of Cu- ba, in the center of the Island, is a road of scenic mountain beauty. There are several cities on the way where adequate hotel accommoda- tions are available at reasonable rates. Gasoline and oil are available in all of the many small cities along route. The large cities have gar- ages and spare parts of most popu- lar makes of American automo- biles. Those people who are not accus- tomed to Cuban driving should drive only in the daytime. Drivers should become accustomed to Pushing the horn button at every intersection. Expression has it that the person who honks first has the right away unless you are a for- eigner; then you are automatical- ly wrong. Take Extras Along People making. the trip should carry along a spare tire, an extra fuel pump, and other small items that may give trouble to the car in some desolate area. To those. people who wish to make the trip in the form of a lei- surely vacation, there are many resorts along the route-or close by. Hunting and fresh water fishing is especially good in the moun- tainous regions. Anyone hunting should have a Cuban guide. The Navy has not as yet given its official sanction to their person- nel to drive to the station. The rea- son being because of a lack of a ferry in the past making it impos- sible. People who plan to make the trip should plan on at least two full days of driving from Cardenas. Plans should also call for four hours driving the last 60 miles. The local Junior Chamber of Commerce has already received a letter from a Navy man at the Guantanamo Base, requesting in- formation concerning the ferry. All people making the trip should be very careful to check automo: | bile “insurance clauses. Most poli- cies are not in effect for foreign driving. Gillispie Ends Thirty Years Of Naval Service first was taken on a tour of the city in buses and autos. The first stop was the Naval Base at Cardenas for cocktails and dancing.
