Seturday, Merch 13, 1954 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN izcd Page 5 “A Costly Salvation” Will Be Rev. Coulter Bases Sermons On Classic Each Sunday Evening until Eas- ter a series of Sermons built around the Christian Classic “‘Pil- grim’s Progress” will be given at the First Presbyterian Church, ac- cording to announcement made this week by Rev. Richard E. Coul- ter. This is a continuing emphasis on the Lenten Season to be given in conjunction with the morning ser- ies begun last Sunday morning. The well known and well loved Pilgrim’s Progress was written by the celebrated non-conformist min- ister of 17th Century England. John Bunyan, whose work has had such a profound influence on Christian thought for the last 250 years was born at a time of civil and relig- ious strife. Born in 1628 at Bedford, Bunyan lived through the beheading of Charles I, the Cromwell influence, the Long Parliment, the Restora- tion of Charles II and the terrible persecution of non-conformists in England. Bunyan was imprisoned twice for his faith. Once for twelve years. During his second imprison- ment he wrote the epic story of the journey of Pilgrim to the Heav- enly land, to the Cross. of Christ. Pilgrim’s Progress is an allegory that describes the faith, trials, and triumphs of those who follow Jesus in the journey through life. Mr. Coulter will give a resume of the first Chapter of this book Sunday night at 7:30. The morning Lenten Series will continue tomorrow with the Pastor speaking on “The Means of Sal- vation.” Requests have been made for the printing and distribution of this series. As soon as they | The pastor of the First Metho- dist Church, the Rev. J. Paul Touchton, will preach in the morn- ing worship service on the topic “A Costly Salvation.” Emphasis will be made to the fact that to save the world it cost Jesus of Nazareth his life. Not only so to get the message of God’s love and care through to the world it has cost the children of God very dearly, sometimes even to the losing of their lives. As we approach the Easter sea- son once again our thoughts are drawn to the sacrifices of Jesus in behalf of all who will be saved. That salvation is free all men can appreciate but the cost not only to God but to those who have brought the news is of great value to all men. The choir of the First Methodist Church will sing in the morning worship service “Christian, the morn breaks sweetly o’er thee,” by Shelley. The evening anthem will be “I was glad” by Waghorne. At the evening worship service Mr. Willis Walker will be the guest preacher. A graduate of Mil- ligan College Mr. Walker has been accepted in the freshman class of the School of Religion at Boston University next fall. The Rev. Mr. Touchton who for eleven years preached in churches in Ybor City, Tampa, will conduct the evening preaching service in Spanish at El Salvador Methodist Church.
