ANOTHER VIEW OF CHRISTMAS Editor, The Citizen, In reference to an article in the Dec. 8 edition of The Citizen I wish to make certain remarks in A writer in “People’s Forum” states that “Christ should be put back in Christmas.” This other disillusioned writer states that Christ has no connection’ with Christmas. Maybe the God fearing people of the world are wrong in observ- ing December 25 as Christ's birth date. In my opinion they are not. Although no positive date of His birth exists, records in the Ency- — clopedia Americana show it to be around January 6. Yet in the Book of Knowledge, itis, written that the date of Dec. 25 was set as Christ’s birth date back in 532 A. D. by Dionysis Exiguus, a monk of Sythia. This date was chosen much nearer to the time of Chirst than the 20th century and undoubt- edly a better basis for the time of His birth was known then. Why must people of this nature try to change, in their mind, cus- toms dating back to nearly the time they occurred? The writer seems well-educated in certain facts in the Bible but does not have the pride to connect his name with his statements. Therefore, if he refuses to observe the birth of Chirst, why does -he try to in- fluence other people with his rab- ble. I will grant that Christmas has been built into a great commer- cial racket in the past years, but I fully agree that we should more humbly observe Christmas as Christ's birthday. It is fitting and proper that we observe some date as his birthday. Basil L. Stearns (Editor’s note: Although the letter entitied ‘Christmas Questioned” was marked unsigned, the writer of the letter made a note to the effect that The Citizen was free to disclose his identity to anyone interested enough to come to the office and inquire.)
