Two accomplices received prison terms Of two years and six months respectively. Passed out the sentences after | trial in Criminal Court. * The convictions came less than a week from the time the thefts man in whose home the stolen! southern Bell also was granted | merchandise. was stored. Monroe will spend the next five years in the state prison after admitting to being the ringleader in the group which broke into the warehouse of the Fausto’s Food Market at the Clyde-Mallory Docks. Marvin Brown, 19, a Navy man fattached to the Seaplane Base. was handed a two year sentence for bis part in the thefts and Jessie Thomas was sent to the Monroe County Jail for a six month stretch, Monroé and Brown pleaded guilty ‘to grand larceny charges, The former, who admittedly mas- teredminded the thefts, testified at the trial that Thomas aided him in the piecemeal robberies and that he used Brown’s car to trans- port the stolen goods. Police and Sheriff's Deputies re- covered cafned goods and assort- ed groceries valued at upwards of $500 last Saturday morning when the case first came to light | after Mrs, Patricia Patterson, 1016 Howe Street phoned police and said that she “knew Where some stylen groteries were.” When Police des: cended on that address, they found 23 cases of groceries and Sheriff's Deputies later confiscated 27 ad tional cases of loot. Carl Weekley, owner ot the food market, has set’ the total value of the missing merchandise at “near- | ly $3000.” Monroe, had been employed by Weekley as a helper after being | Paroled from the State Prison Camp at Big Pine Key where he was serving a sentence for rob- bery. One month ago, the “majors” as big national chain gas stations are known, reduced their price per gallon from 30 and one-half cents jto 27 and one-half cents, the ; amount charged by ‘independent operator Frank Russo on Stock Is- land. Russo, it is reported without confirmation from him, is going to retal by cutting several cents lower next week, in his ef- fort to keep below the majors’ prices. Russo, owner of the Overseas Garage, when called early to- day, would not comment on the size of the cut. It was learned, however, that he plans to bring his price below the 27 and one-half cents per gallon next week. Russo's gasoline is tested by the state and is required to meet state specifications. He said today that motorists }have saved thousands of dol- hte] costs by puPoniting , independent stations ’in the Kiys,” of which his and the one in TaVer- nier are the only ones.
