CONCH CHOWDER By RAYMER Nothing like a weekend to clean up the desk of odds, and ends and odd blends. I keep find- ing obscure little notes scribbled down some time ago and put on the spike. By the time I try to deciper them they require a long memory and the sort of associa- tion test technique. For example, I have one which reads “Kang- aroo McClain.” The jump on that is Photographer Lewis Mc- Lain’s habit of unbuttoning his shirt just above the beltline and making a sort of tummy pocket next to his welcome mat (bear pelt style), skin where he can conveniently tuck slides fot the camera. I saw him doing it at the award ceremonies for the firemen who were commended a week or so ago. That brings us to the next hieroglyphic a la Raymer notes | which read “Under the Nutless Coconut Trees, and stand .. .” That was the day of the ceremony mentioned when just as the commendation hour approached, so did Senator | Harley Kilgore with Dr. Ralph Herz, to see Rear Admiral Duke who was all set to begin the awards. Well... not even an admiral can tell a senator to reporters stand | and stand, and stand, and stand, | | Hospital Party Slated Monday By VFW And Aux. The V. F. W. After collecting a considerable sum, he has one object in mind, a shapely blonde object, to wit: a countess, enacted with svelte charm by Danielle Darrieux. The name of the veteran actor who plays Von Papen with a smooth- ness that steals the show when- ever he appears, escapes my memory. Anyway, he has Von Pa- pen’s mannerisms down pat, as anyone who has seen the real German nobleman in newsreels will recall. .Michael Rennie looks the part of the hawkfaced, eagle- eyed British counter spy, com- plete with baggy tweeds, floppy trench-coat and snap brim hat. . . at least that’s what is expected of an intelligence agent cinema ver- sion. Actually, they are usually un- obstrusive looking. The suspense element is sustain- ed as you watch the valet extract the secrets from the safe and then contact the enemy buyers who are ready to kill him when his use- fulness is at an end. The German officials in Turkey are exceptional- ly well done as character studies. In fact, the documentary film is one of the best of its kind. There’s a sensationai surprise ending. Try to see the story from its beginning so as not to lose the thread or spoil the exciting sequence. The Navy musters about 24 per cent of Armed Forces personnel or about 800,000 men and women.
