Although we are ae customed to thinking of commer- cial fishery off the coust of Maine other North Atlantic beds hold pro- mise of future importance, sinc® they ean be readily obtained with an otter trawl. The north Atlanti¢e eoast shrimp. PPandalus borealis, commonly live at depths greate® than 25 fathoms and have bees found to a depth of 1,000 meters, or 5447 fathoms. UUnlike the southera shrimp, Penaeus sp., which relea’- es its eggs beneath the tail until they hateh. Q. What is the tripletail? A. The tripletail or flasher, Lo botes surinamensis, receives the former name from the backward- extending flaps of the soft dorsal and anal fins, which give it the | fancied appearance of having three tails. Reaching a length ot 3 feet, the tripletail is related to the groupers and sea basses, though belonging in a separate family. This flattened fish has the habit of lying on its side at the surface | of the water, usually near floating | Seaweed, an anchored boat, buoy, ete. Young specimens look re- © markably like a floating mangrove leaf, which they resemble in colo- ration. Q. Why do clams squirt water through their siphons? A. For three main reasons: (1) to breathe, (2) to obtair. food, and (3) to eliminate waste products. Since clams are relatively im- mobile and their movements are usually limited to burrowing in the sand, they are provided with a double tube, the siphon, -vhich operates in much the same man- ner as the snorkel of a submarine, Water pumped in through the in- current siphon passes over the gills and at the same time is strained to remove particles of food. After receiving carbon di- oxide from the gills, and other waste products from the digestive tract, the water is expelled through the excurrent, or outgoing, siphon. Constant circulation of the water is maintained by the beating of a multitude of microscopic hairs, or cilia, located on the insides of the tube and in the gill chamber. Q. What is the difference be- tween a spanish mackerel and a cero mackerel? A, Although both of these ex- cellent food fishes are, hat familiar in appearance, may be distinguished readily as follows: The spanish mackerel, Seambero- morus maculatus, reaches a length of about 3 feet and is marked on the sides with a number of small, brownish-yellowish spots. The ce- ro or painted mackerel, Scombero- morus regalis, is somewhat more slender, reaching a length of 6 feet, and tends to keep more offshore. In this fish the lateral spots are somewhat smaller and thend to unite in a continuous band along the side. Neither of these fish is closely related to the common, or northern mackerel, Scomber seom- brus. Q. Do moray eels ever leave their holes in search of food? A. Yes. Morays habitually leave their burrows at night to forage for food, and occasionally they may be seen “on the prowl’ the daytime as well. This is ticularly true of the large vicious green moray. The moray spends most of the light hours hidden away in a crevice, a hole in the rocks, junder a mass of mangrove roots joverhanging a channel. Usually |just the moray's head is visible junder these circumstances, al- jthough it will come forth rapidly lat the sight or scent of food. Be- | cause of their elongate shape and | sharpe teeth, morays are popular- ly known as the “rattlesnakes of ithe sea,” but it should be re- _ membered that their bite is not poisonous, despite the severe wounds a large specimuum is capa- ble of inflicting. 1 | | 1 | | Some plantlike animals which live in the sea are capable, when cut in pieces, of developing a complete animal from each piece. the or «SY wesT DIAL 1564
