Hoston S. Coney, 54-year-old em- ploye of a basket factory here, e Ex-Coal Miner Is Governor Vi e e Of W. Virginia By PHIL MANGELSDORF CHARLESTON, W. Va. (?—Five years ago William C. Marland was graduated from the West Virginia University Law School at Morgan- town. Today the 34-year-old veteran and ex-coal miner stands ready to take over th. Democratic ad- rainistration which has been in power at the statehouse here since 1932. Although he'll be by four years the youngest governor the state has ever had, Marland is no “boy wonder.” Rather, he moved steadily up- ward under the guiding hand of the administration of retiring Gov. Okey L. Patteson. His self-deter- mination has yet to be proved. Marland moved through a tur- bulent campaign, rife with vilifi- cation, without becoming involved in the heavy oratorical crossfire. Few GOP attacks were aimed at him personally. Against him stood Republican Rush D. Holt, who in 1935 wae a “boy wonder” senator. United Mine Workers Chieftain John L. Lewis came to West Vir- ginia—largest producing state of soft coal in the nation—and gruf- fly told his 115,000 miners not to vote for Holt or any other Re- publican. West Virginia was one of nine states which went for Stevenson, Marland’s followers tell of the time during a particularly heated period of the campaign when he was to make what was consid- ered an extraordinarily important speech. As the preliminary speech-mak- ing progressed Marland had not made his appearance. His workers found him quietly napping in an offstage room. They credit his experiences as a naval officer for his ability to relax. Marland once took com- mand of an LSM in Philadelphie and found that he, of all the crew, was the only one with sea exper- ience. He got his ship to Pearl Harbor safely. Marland’s father is a mine super- inténdent at the family home town, Glen Rogers. The new gov- ernor worked in the mine there, and is still a member of the UMW, Marland received an A.B. degree from Alabama University before joining the Navy. After his re- lease from service he took his law degree. He moved into the -| statehouse as assistant attorney general in 1948, and « year later was appointed attorney general by Patteson. Marland is three children. No great changes are expected under his administration. He made his friendly, hand-shaking, neigh- borly campaign on a basis of “good roads, good schools and more fish.” By fish he meant expanded rec- reational facilities married and has was killed when hit by a car driven , | by William Reed, said Patrolman J. E. Walworth. It was the first fatality in the Arkansas capital in 356 days—since Dec. 4, 1951 The city had planned a celebra- tion, including a parade on Dee, 4 in the event the “deathless days” goal was reached, Mayor Pratt remel said last night there had been no decision on whether the event will be called off. The 356 days without a traffie fatality is a record for cities with populations between 100,000 and | 120,000,
