Key West, Florida, has the most equable climate in the country, with an average range of only 14° Fahrenheit Features “and Photo . Services. For 72 Years Devoted to the Best Interests of Key West The Key West Citizen VOL. LXXIII, No. 283 HOMELESS WAIFS HAVE A GLOOMY THANKSGIVING BY DOROTHY RAYMER Let’s suppose. Pretend you are | seated in a clean, comfortable room served with a fine Thanks- giving dinner with the turkey done to a glistening brown glaze over a thick slab of delicate white meat, and your plate is heaped with whipped mashed potatoes steam- ing savorily with gravy flanked by perfectly flavored, richly but- tered vegetables, a tasty chef’s salad, a dab of garnet-colored cranberry sauce—and visions of pumpkin pie dance through the future. All this and coffee, too. And then, suppose you found that everyone you knew and loved, or even a casual acquaintance you might have planned to dine with, had vanished. The loneliness would probably overwhelm your appetite. You might eat automatically, but the joy just wouldn’t be there. You'd feel like a deserted dog and want to throw back your head and howl. There are a half a dozen dogs out at the Humane Society in the same plignt. Only their situation is real, not ‘‘supposed”’. They are up for “adoption,” but no one has come to offer a home. On Thanks- giving Day, they will all get an ex- tra ration of meat in addition to the . regular meal. They have clean, comfortable epmpartments. | But even a dog can be lonely. £d Quinby, the Humane Society agent, does whaf he can to give the “lost” dogs 2 fitfle extra at- tention as well as excellent physi- cpl capa: byt he’s a bysy man, on Aall sdvRi days @ we a: how 6 (Contittued On Page Four) Voting Will Be With New Election Precinets 17 NEW VOTING DISTRICTS ARE ESTABLISHED IN ORDINANCE MON. Four persons were made homeless in the fire which at times threatened to spread throughout the neighborhood. Fire Chief Ch and Assistant Fire Chief Charles Torres credited the absence of a wind with saving more homes in the area from destruction when a short circuit started the blaze in | im Strachan of 710 White- head Street. No one was home at the time. Within minutes, the small frame cottage was a mass of flames. The home was complete- ly destroyed by the blaze. Aside from our thanks to God for sparing our lives, we, in common with Americans generally, should be thankful that the Russians lack the backbone to fight that the Germans and the Japs had before the beginning of World War II. Russia’s history proves it has been loath to wage war and that the type of war in which it is adept is to spread |lies and resort to chicanery to try to create dissension | among nations aligned against her. We are thankful that the hurricane season is over jand that no hurricanes came this way. For the benefit of atrangers who have heard dire things about “Florida hur- ricanes,” it should be stated that; in the 82 years we have hada Weather Bureau station, center of only one hur-! ricane (1870) passed over Key West, and that only two lives in all that time have been lost in hurricanes in Key West, one in the 1909 and one in the 1910 hurricane. Have you good health? If you have, then nothing j else, least of all the size of your bank account, compares | with it as a reason for your thanks, Finally, let us be thankful that we can look forward to shirt-sleeved weather ithe next three or four months, | while peopledp. other. arts. of, Ps nation have to wear jovercoats When they ven' out of doors. ; Peper cage | Contestants Await | Judges Verdict In | Oratorical Meet Three Key West High school “| girls are awaiting anxiously the results of the judging in the annual Junior Chamber of Com- merce sponsored, “Voice of Democracy” speaking contest. which was run off Tuesday night. “| The results of the five judges’ | decision will be announced Sat- The contestants were Carol ai Dalton, representing the Key High School; Jackie | Delaney of the Convent of Mary Immaculate and Attention Please!
