Made 11 KW Trips With President; Well-Known And Well-Liked Here By Susan McAvoy Joseph H. Short, 48, President Truman's press secretary died sud- denly at his home in Alexandria, Va., last night. His wife, the former Beth Camp- bell said she heard him fall up ran up and found his heart had stopped, according to the uw. Short had accompanied President Truman to Key West on all eleven |the working vacations was well known to the city as to the na- tion. The President said upon hearng the news. “Joe Short’s death is as shock- ing to me as if he had been a member of my own family. For he was more than a trusted and valued assistant. I know how un- | sparing of his health hé was in his service to me and to his country.” The White House said Short became ill last Tuesday night and was hospitalized with a virus in- fection. He returned to his home Monday to recuperate. The white-haired smiling “Mr. Secretary” though a difficult man from whom to elicit news was well liked by the White House corres- pondents as well as us “Little White House corespondents.” A veteran newspaperman he un- derstood our problems of trying to get a story for our papers; but his loyalty to “The Chief” came be- fore his loyalty to the working press and when he had no story he did not dream one up. Short succeeded Press Secretary | Charles G. Ross who collopsed and died at his desk in December, 1950. We had written Short on Septem- ber 9 asking him to give us a hint | as to President Truman's decision to come to Key West in November. The President had indicated at his personal press conference las March that he might return wheth' | er or not he ran for reelection. | When no answer came frem the aually prompt Short, we | wondered. Today all of us news. |paper people were shocked and | grieved. Short, a native of Vicksburg, Mass., had been a newspaperman ‘since 1925. He began as a re- porter for the Jackson, Miss, Daily News, following gradua- tion from Virginia’ Military In- stitute. In 1928-29 he worked for the New Orleans Times-Picay- une, leaving to join the Associat- ed Press at Richmond, Va. Dur- ing 1931-41 he served in the AP’s Washington bureau, then to the Chicago Sun's Washington staff, moving two years later to the Baltimore Sun. He was pres- ident of the National Press Club in 1948 Survivors include Mrs, Short and three children. Assisting Short in the busy press office of the White House was Roger Tubby, also known to Key Westers from his visits here with the President. Our letter to Joe as he wal known to the working press closed “We hope that we will be greeting all of you at Boca Chica sometime early in November.
