Sawyer Deputy Clerk sept5-12-19-26;oct3,1952 Stevenson Razzed About Hole In Shoe; Many Offers SPRINGFIELD, Ill. w#—People were having a lot of fun today with Gov. Adlai Stevenson because of an Associated Press picturé that showed a hole in the sole of his shoe, Telegrams and letters poured into the Democratic presidential candidate’s headquarters in Spring- field, Most of them kidded him, an aide said. But some—apparently from Republicans—were couched in sharper terms. And others sim- ply inquired how come the gov- ernor of a great state went around with a hole in his shoe, One man offered to buy Steven- son a new pair of shoes, provided “you won't wear them in Wash- ington. I don’t want to see you go there.” Stevenson said he might counter with an offer to wear the shoes only in Springfield, even if he is elected. “I'd like to accept the shoes,” he grinned, Another asked him if he had “stepped on a hot spot” in this political campaign. And still an- other accused him of trying to arouse the maternal interest of women voters by going around in such apparel, In Flint, Mich., Frederick R, El- liott, president of a shoe company, wrote Stevenson asking for his size and promising to send him a new pair of shoes. Elliott is a Republican. He asked why Steven- son “couldn't afford a new pair after 20 years of Democratic ad- ministration.” The photograph was taken while Stevenson was sitting, with crossed knees, waiting to speak in Flint, Mich., last Monday. 211 SIMONTON ST, TEL. 378 | ———— apr2tf| TWO-BEDROOM Sunshine home.
