The Judge of ; ‘ : ion certificates, as herein author-) tional offices of Justi st ide, Business SECRETS | 22" ip eter an | a sec me Any coity charter F->* By SAM DAWSON NEW YORK (?—Business heads toward its expected fall pickup with an abundance of optimistic feports today to wave it on. There is bad news, too, of course: Warnings of lower profits, fears. of over-building industrial capacity, and the International Monetary Fund’s report that world financial conditions are on the downgrade because some coun- tries--are trying to live beyond their incomes. But here is today’s quota of good ews within the United States: Joblessness has dropped to around its lowest point since the end of World War Il. The De- partment of Commerce predicts this condition will last at least un- til November, Industrial production has re- bounded quickly after its tumble in mid-summer due to the steel strike and the vacation periods. Steel production this week will be back to 100 per cent of capac- ity, for the first time since the end of May. Many in the industry are now predicting that, supply and demand of steel should be pretty well balanced by the first part of mext year. Americans have a record supply of money, the Federal Reserve Board reports. It puts the money supply—bank deposits plus curren- ¢y in circulation outside the banks —at 186 billion dollars, or 10 bil- fon more than a year ago. Demand deposits have gained five billion dollars over mid-sum- mer of 1951. Time deposits are up four billions. And there are one billion more dollars circulating @utside the banks. There are optimistic reports in individual industries also: July and August sales of some of the big mail order houses shot up sharply over a year ago. Farm machinery sales are run- fring ahead of 1951, Exhibitors at the annual Leather Bhow here this week predict a good season for the shoe industry. i R. Glass, executive vice president of the Tanners Council of America, which sponsors the show, says that good retail shoe business recently is assuring shoe makers of better orders for the spring lines now on display. The hosiery industry is looking up, too. The National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers reports that July shipments topped the same month last year by 26 per cent. It was the best July for the industry since the end of World War I. And shipments for the first seven months were 3.2 per better than for the same pe- of 1951, fh é The National Cotton Council hailing the pickup in. the textile industry in recent weeks, sees a rift in the clouds over the export market. It predicts that the short- age of dollars and inadequate credit arrangements which has hurt American cotton exports’ in recent years will be a lot less eritical in the months ahead. The council says that foreign countries are earning American dollars at a record rate of almost 15 billion a year. The council thinks a lot of those dollars will ‘go for purchases of cotton here. When you are preparing scram- bled eggs, allow two eggs for each serving, Whisk the yolks and whites together just enough to mix; over- beating is said to cause them to separate during the scrambling. Lavatory White Bathroom Set OIL PAINT INTERIOR - EXTERIOR Q. Is the lamprey a true fish? A. Although it was long considered to be a true fish, the lamprey 18 now regarded as belonging to a lower class, Cyclostomes, which include all species of lam- preys and their blind allies the hagfishes, differ from true fishes in their lacking a head differ- entiated from the rest of the body, jaws, ribs, and paired appendages. They also lack a framework of the body consist- ing of a primitive stiff but flex- ible central rod, the notochord. In embryo or very young fishes the notochord is present but is other Cyclostomes superficially resemble eels and are largely parasitic in habit. Lampreys at- tach themselves to the bodies of larger fishes by means of their funnel mouth armed with Tings of horny teeth, rasp away the flesh with the spiny tongue, and feed on the blood and body fluids of their host. Lampreys inhabit both fresh and salt wa- ter. Q. Of what use is the ‘‘saw” to the sawfish? A. This large, sharklike creature is actually a true ray, allied to the skates, since its gills are on the underside. Its head is equipped with a long, flat, bony rostral blade or “saw” which bears a row of evenly-spaced strong teeth along each edge. The mouth, on the other hand, is small and practically devoid of teeth and is situated beneath the head. Recent observations made on captive sawfish at the Lerner Marine Laboratories at Bimini have shown that the saw- fish will impale small fishes on the edge of its “‘saw” by raising it upward and shaking the head vigorously from side to side. When a fish has been “‘snagged”’ in this manner, the sawfish will sink to the bottom to devour its meal. Q. Is it true that certain marine organisms show response to par- ticular phases of the moon? A. Yes, a number of marine crea- tures are noted for showing a definite “lunar periodicity”. The Grunion, Leuresthes, a small fish of the Pacific Coast of A- merica (see Sea Secrets, Sec B July 8) spawns on the highest tide of the series following the full of the moon or the new moon. Perhaps the best-known ease of lunar periodicity is the famous palalo worm. of Samoa and Fiji, which lives in crevices about the coral reefs. This worm Eunice Viridis, produces many posterior segments that become erowded with eggs or sperm cells.as the breeding season ap- proaches. On the first day of the last quarter of the October- November moon, these sexual segments become detached from the rest of the worm and swim under their own power to the surface of the sea, where the eggs and sperm are discharged into the water. Vast swarms of these worms occur three or four days, and the na- tives, who regard them as a great delicacy, collect Eunice in baskets, wrap them in leaves, and roast them. Another spec- ies of marine worm, the lumin- ous Leodice fucata of the West Indies and Gulf of Mexico, swarms in the third quarter of the June-July moon. Q. What is the “‘red-eyed mullet?” A. This mullet, Mugil gaimardia- mus, is known from Cuba and elsewhere in the Caribbean, but is only an occasional visitor to 98c $ 7.95 $ 9.95 $11.95 57350 $195.00 $1.50 Gal. $2.50 Gal. ‘the Constitution of 1885, of the | "(s) to establish and maintain © ‘under S7ate Ve Toesies. 48 pane Joint Sencls- sinking fund or funds to meet future tions amendms ‘to. the Mirena Tequirements for debt service, or re- Constitution. of the State of Florida. | serves therefor, on bonds or motor ve- ane is same were agreed to by a vote | hicie tax anticipation certificates issu-|ed by of all the mem! elected ‘to each jhouse; that the votes on said 8-upen their respective Journsis. with a @lectors Blection Nov ember 4th, “1952.
