Shrieks in the middle of CONCH CHOWDER by RAYMER Lured like Adam, by an apple, the little monkey who hid out in the rafters of the Seaplane Base han- gar also showed a sweet-tooth be-| fore he was caught. He licked the | sugar from doughnuts which were | placed within his reach and tossed | the rest of the delicacy to the floor. The other day I saw a Rhesus chained on the h of an automo- bile with a Miami license. Perhaps the escapee who haunted the heli- copter home was the rider of the ear. At any rate, the story of the hangar hider was sent to the As- | sociated Press and maybe a call will come in from out cf town. Our garden of Eden with Adams (J. R., Earl and Mel), Eves, apes, et al, would not be+ complete without the proverbial serpent. Mrs. Jack*Thompson provided the proper sequence. She said that a three foot black snake was easing | along in her back yard the same day the monkey report came in. She wisely informed pursuing chil- dren that the snake was harmless, that it kept away rats and to let it alone. I used to have a green grass-snake named “David” who | liked to stretch inside my sweater sleeves, now and then sticking his head out to uncldse a leathery eye- lid and survey the world with lan- guor. But one night he escaped from his shoebox house and nestled lived in the next room at the soro- the night, a wild hunt for “David,” a session with the Dean of Women on the harboring of reptiles. . .and I had to say goodbye to my pet. I must say he simply wriggled away in the grass with not so much as a backward waggle. The owl I had one summer after finding him with a broken wing and installing him in our stable loft was just as nonchalant. When he was well enough to take off, he didn’t even give a hoot. . .and af- ter all the trouble“f’d gone to pro- viding him with tasty mice, bugs and raw hamburger! He was also provided, unintentionally, with a cat who lived through the encount- er, but after that had haybale pho- bia for the rest of her eight lives. The ninth one was practically giv- en to the owl who pounced on the cat’s back one night while she was mousing im the barn. Instead of sitting around playing bridge, Willie got busy in whatever community she found herself to improve conditions for women, children and people generally, In the BPW Willie says that em- phasis now is on getting women to accept women as co-workers and bosses. “I have found that men will ac- cept women in the business world but the story is different with wo- men. You will hear a woman say: ‘I'd rather work for a man any day than work for a woman’, The non-embattled feminist says that women must be educated to the fact that difficult personalities in bosses can belong to men just as well as women. The barrier wo- men set up against each other must be broken down by training and schooling. Wilehimina believes that women can do a tremendous job in further- ing good government. “We outnumber men as voters in the nation now. United, we women can make our voices heard..’ BPW not only stresses these broad issues, but highly important to the individual working woman, it stresses health and safety. “We stress the health of business women. Sheller, USS Sennett, bought a new Harley Davidson machine last week. He left it parked at. the Southard street gate of the Navy Yard. That was the last time he saw it. He re- ported his loss to the Sheriff's office which began an investiga- tion. Last night Sheriff Sawyer got a tip that a brand new motorcy- cle was parked over on Caroline street across from Thompson En- terprises. He followed up the lead, found the shining machine and told the night watchman to keep an eye on it till he sent for it. A neighbor said she had seen two sailors leave the motorcycle there last week and then “run for it.” This morning the City Police had already sent one of their motorcycle men for the machitie.
