THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Sod Grass And Muck Transform Appearance Of Island Lawns Charlie Wardlow Gives * | get some information on the sub- Information On Where Lawn Supplies Originate By Bill Gibb It has only been in recent years that most Key Westers have come to know the beauty of lawns. We have always had wonderful shrub- | bery here on the “Rock’’, but it was of a native kind adapted to marl, sand, and shallow top soil. Green lawns ,as such, were almost non-existent. Now, however, this picture has begun to change Have you noticed the huge trail- er loads of muck and sod that are being brought into town? They are transforming the looks of the island. Your reporter called an old friend, Charlie Wardlow, to try to ject. Here is what he was told: Most of the sod grass comes from fields near Davey, Florida. They grow hundreds of acres of grass there—irrigate, fertilize, and mow the fields just like you would your own lawn. When sold for the market, the grass is cut into 1’ X 2’ squares with a tractor-drawn apparatus. These squares are loaded on trail- ters by men using pitchforks. All | vehicles that go into the fields are lequipped with huge, swamp-bug- | gy tires. | “I saw one man going over a \field with a mine detector,” said | Charlie. “When I asked him if he | was looking for buried treasure, he | gave me a rather disgusted look.” “I’m hunting my bulldozer,” he replied gruffly. The boggy fields are sometimes forty feet deep in muck. Once a GIFFEN INDUSTRIES, INC. Black Muck The black muck that is used to | spread as top soil comes from bogs around West Hollywood. It is a mix- ture of muck and sugar sand and is dug from pits deep enough so that there is no danger of weed seed being mixed in it. This muck releases hydrogen and helps hold moisture. The effect that it has on grass already grow- ing is almost miraculous. Charlie Wardlow Wardlow’s Landscaping grew in- to a business from a_ hobby. Charlie has always been interest- ed in horticulture. He received much of his training under Mr. Ru- fus Pittman, the man who laid out the Navy Hospital grounds and was in a large measure, responsible for the beauty of Casa Marina’s lawns. “The water situation is our main me. “We're having a struggle to plant new lawns, to get water for spraying, etc.” Sam Drudge Wins KW Golf Club Bid Roy M. It will house a club lounge, pro shop, and bar facilities, Alterations are being made to the men’s lock- er room, installation of showers, etc. CBS construction is being used. Terrazzo floors, glass jalousied windows will provide luxurious comfort. Original plans for the present work were started in 1947. Ik was at this time that a percentage of the income to the club derived from its sixty members was reg- ularly put to one side. Mr. Duke stressed the fact that all money that went into the building fund come from Club members and not who pay green fees. During the 5-month period from December through April, Fhas said 633 gamblers paid $141,355 to the government.
