Just who will make the call is unknown at this point. But the Bell sys- tem thinks that whoever he is, he’ll be making history. It will be the first time that anybody has ever made a real long-distance call without dealing with an operator —and without waiting for the operator to put the call through. The fellow had better have something fitting and proper to say when he starts talking. This new turning point* in communications history |= coincides with the 75th an- niversary of the telephone. The American Telephone and ‘Telegrah company is mighty proud of it. MacArthur told the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees today that on January 12 the joint chiefs of staff made the same proposals he gave to Congress April 19.
