(tal IS LOU 5 SR aE Nes ll i] Ld FRANKFURT, Germany.—(Via Air Mail) Hans Raske is with the Salvation Army in Frankfurt, | In front of the railway, terminal he and other members of the or- ganization sing | songs...and save people. The singing is sometimes! aceompaitied Hy eid winds ana: falling leayés, |” But if there ever. ‘awas a time; when the German people needed singing and spiritual aid, they need it now. And so members of the Salvation Army form a circle and sing on into the night, People passing by join the circle and ofter. a hundred people or more can be heard singing Ger- man folk songs, hymns, etc, The music is good. That's why pedestrians join the group. One of the bettér songs is: “Dis Wal- ten Kommen_ Nachen” (The Waves Come Nearer). Raske can sing that one like nobody's busi- ness. He doesn't monkey around with it, He sings it like it’s sup- posed to be sung. - That's what attracted me tothe! eirele one night. In'a few miniites| I was sifiging With the ‘est,’ half’ German, half English ‘ahd’ Haff’ i tune. But it jdn’t make any’ dif} ference. Most of the singers were off-tune, It stuinds ‘better’ that’ way. And there’s something ‘to work for. The ladies come around with ® contribution box.. They are so nice, and so appreciative, one cannot refuse them, Raske speaks to those who are despairing of one thing or another. I was not despairing, but evidently my gen- eral appearance indicated as much, and Raské walked over to say a few words ‘to’ me. I told him the singing bee was very in- teresting. I asked him how the Salvation Army. was coming along “Well, we are making _pro- ereas,” he said, “even though nine of our 12 houses in this area wete destroyed in’ the war.” “Haven't a@hy of them been re- built?” TL aeked. “One, in*Pratkfurt; is being re~ built now,” he. said, “but: money is very searce in Germany?’ He didn’t have tell one that.» 4 “How do the Germans receive Salvation Army workers?" I:ask- ed “They Are the world’s worst.” Raske sai’t They used to make fun of us’ during and before the war.” Raske recalled. “Some of them still do. The Germans didn't have mueh respect for us during Hit- ler’s regime. After all,. we were not very militaristic.” But Hans says they are com- ing eround. More of them stop and sing. More seek advice. and help and more are being: saved. Hans explained that workers such as himself receive only a pitiful compensation for their ef- forts. It is not enough to live on, and fe workers must have other jobs. They work in the day and ing at night. That takes a lot of doing The surprising thing about Hans Raske, however, is that he ‘bday night. All Hoosier servicemen: bere.
