Phillips, “The Once Over,” in The Boston Daily Globe Havana is ‘a city of parks, po- licemen, salodns, hotels, hairless dogs, fatigued bartenders, palm trees, fruit juices, liquors, palaces, cigar stores, overcrowded hotels and erratic jitney drivers. | It. thas a population of 700,000 ° going, ecining and uncertain. Twenty-seven years ago America helped Cuba win its freedom. Today Cuba does a big business, giving us demon- strations in what it is like. This is an island where the pad- lock is still regarded as something used on woodsheds and spare tires. As you land in Havana you get the impression it is a city where thy natives put in their time lean- ing against buildings. After you have been here ‘24 hours you rea- lize thet most of the leaning is being done by American tourists. The principal industry of Havana is supplying head- aches to visitors from the United States. It hus a ca- pacity of about 500,000 head- aches a day. Havana is the home of accom- modating poligemen. There are policemen everyvehere, including } the barrooms.’ Service is their motto. They will adjust disputed) bills, settle arguments, teach you, Spanish in 10 simple lessons, help) you find your shirt studs, tie your dress tie for you, pinch hit in a quartet or clean your straw hat for you while you wait. They will do nothing but arrest you. There is a big jail on the Prado, or Main street, but. it is practically unoceupied. Every hotel and home has its patio or open garden. To heighten the feeling of irresponsibility the hotels drape the patio with bird- cages filled with singing canaries. The birds are tayght to sing vio- lently with each drink ordered. When the birds stop singing the Amreican visitor knows he has had enough, Alcoholic stimulants alone are cheap. A glass of plain pineapple costs you 40 cents, but you can get the most powerful cocktail known to man for 20 cents. places where drinks are not served. This must be an over- sight. Dollar bills are in circulation in Cuba today that were spent by the first soldiers to land here in the’ Spanish-American War. Cuba treasures them as sentimental keepsakes. That war made her what she is today ; She ought to be: satisfied. These new uniforms will be somewhat different from the former suits, worn by firemen. The coats will be cut in civilian style, eliminat- ing the military style of collar, which came up high and was close fitting about the neck. The new uniforms for the po- licemen have already arrived. Their outfits include neat white peaps, thus creating a pleasing con- | trast in their official attire.
