HELP AND BITUATIONS, ' Nature’s Children Panchax (Panchax lineat By LILLIAN COX ATHEY. Theseé are. the leaping Lenas of the aquarium tribe. They are from India and from 3!; to 4 inches in length. Some have mistaken this panchax for Haplochilus, & cousin that is more robust and less deco- rative. This little fish is difficult to de- scribe accurately, because it varies 80 with the light in which it is ex- posed. The lovely metallic sparkle cannot be recorded in a picture. At times the metallic scales resemble | tiny flashing mirrors of burnished gold. When conditions change the panchax may be a uniform color of Jade or green. The female has more and de- cidedly stronger vertical bars and fewer red spots than her mate. The black spots at the base of dorsal fin also identify her. Some of these‘ fish have white markings on the | lower and upper edges of the tail fin, some lack them entirely. This is the better known of the Panchax species and the easest fme} to raise. It is fairly peaceable, | though it is not above attacking smaller neighbors and devouring | them. | It is blessed with a very large mouth for its size and has no dim-\ culty whatever in disposing of a| half-grown guppy. It seems to have | a never-satisfied appetite. The large, | beautiful eyes seem almost human | in their expression. When you be- come familiar with the habits of these Tovely fish and feed them they seem to recognize the fact that your | regular attendance upon them has| gomething to do with their comfort. | Panchax belongs in the egg-laying group. The parents must be fed on | nourishing food prior to the egg laying, as fish during spawning days do not take food. The aquarium should be supplied with thick float- | ing Utricularia or Ricca, upon which | the eggs may be laid. The water | should be kept warm by placing the aquarium in a sunny window or in| 8 light place keeping the water warm. Spawning will usually take place In a day or two. Remove the egg- filled plants carefully to a hatching Jar, thus protecting the tiny young, when they hatch, from their par- ents. Fresh plants should replace those removed. When the babies arrive see that they have a liberal | supply of small daphnia — pro- Hillcrest Association Elects J. W. Martin John W.
