By VICTOR EUBANK, NEW YORK, May 14.—A series of selling blasts again struck the stock market today and swept leaders overboard for losses of 2 to 19 points, many hitting new lows for more than a year. With the ticker tape frequently as much as 4 minutes behind floor transactions, volume of around 3,500,000 shares topped yesterday's turnover and was the largest since last September. As in the slump of the preceding session, today's slide was blamed principally on Wall Street gloom re- sulting from reported allied reverses in the European struggle. In addi- tion, some unloading of so-called war stocks was thought to have been based on the idea that the recent German blitzkrieg might bring quick victory to one side or the other and eventuate in peace. Then, too, fears of the United States becoming in- volved if the conflict continues served to dampen speculative ardor. A wide assortment of rumors in commission houses helped accentu- ate the confusion. Aside from other. clouds, a sharp break in major commodities, with wheat falling the limit of 10 cents a bushel at Chicago, provided little incentive for buyers of stocks to ap- proach the ‘“bargain counter.” Weakness of bonds generally, ine cluding United States Governments, contributed to the bearish mood of boardrooms. Heavy dumping of margin ac- counts impaired by Monday's re- lapse, added to some selling from abroad and from discouraged in- vestors at home, tended to stress pessimism in financial quarters. Several attempts were made to rally the market. A few rails, air- crafts and specialties put up a show of resistance, but final quotstions in virtually all departments were at or near the lows of the day. Outstanding on the slump were Du Pont. Dow Chemical, Union Car- bide, . American Telephone, West= ipghouse, Eastman Kodak, Chrysler, General Motors, U. S. Steel, Beth- lehem, Sears Roebuck, Montgom- ery Ward, J. 1. Case, Douglas Air- craft, American Smelting and Pub- lic Service of New Jersey. Dropping in the curb were Alumi- num of America, American Cyana- mid “B,” New Jersey Zinz, Electrie Bond & Share, Creole Petroleum, Gulf Oil, Mead Johnson and Master Electric.
