By VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer, NEW YORK, May 3.—A sudden relapse and a quick recovery gave stocks a topsy-turvy appearance in today’s market. Leading steels, motors and rubbers tumbled 1 to more than 2 poeints in a forenoon selling rush and then, in the space of relatively few minutes, there was a rebound that substan- - | tially reduced losses or transformed them into sizable gains. The pace quickened on both moves, but turned sluggish before the finish. At the close advances were under the tops and prices well mixed. Transfers were around 1, 100,000 shares. The morning’s slump was blamed on fresh uneasiness over European | developments. The subsequent | right-about came in the wake of the President’s disclosure at his press conference he had urged Italy tc stay out of the war and that the was continuing its efforts to keep the conflict from spreading. The moderately hopefu. | tone of business news was a con- tributing bullish factor. Prominent stocks on the forwar¢ shift were United States Steel, Beth- lenem, General Motors, Glenn Mar- | tin, Baldwin Locomotive, Interna- | tional Paper common and preferred Crown Zellerbach, Rayonier and | American-Hawiian Sugar. Chrysler retrieved part of its first hour’s loss. United States Rubber common and preferred, together with Montgomery Ward.
