LONDON, April 22.—George Nicoll Barnes, 81, a member of David Lloyd George's World War cabinet in 1917, one of the signers of the Treaty of Versailles and a founder | of the British Labor party, died to- day. Mr. Barnes reached the peak of a long public career devoted to the advancement of labor when, as a delegate to the Paris peace confer- ence in 1919, he played an important part in drawing up the constitution of the international labor organi- zation. Prominent at Peace Conference. Numbered among the greater sat- ellites of the “big four” at the Paris conference, Mr. Barnes had taken little active part in politics in recent years, Born in Scotland in 1859, he was | an ardent trade unionist in his | younger years and played a conspic- uous part in labor organization. With the election of three new honorary national vice presidents and reports of officers showing growth throughout the Nation, the National Society, Children of the American Revolution. early this afternoon brought to a close its 45th annual convention in Memorial Con- tinental Hall. The three new honorary national vice presidents elected were Mrs. Horace Mann Towner of Iowa; Miss Aimee E. Powell of New Jersey and Mrs. Charles Groves of the District of Columbia. Mrs. John Morrison Kerr of this city, who continues her term as na- tional president of the society, re- ported that new State societies had been established during the past, year in West Virginia, Utah and Maryland, bringing the total of States organized up to 33. Membership of 10,832, Mrs. Geoffrey Creyke, organizing secretary, reported that during the past year 35 new individual societies had been organized, 24 had been disbanded, leaving a total of 516 active, with 119 more new ones in process of organization. Service 46 Years Frisbey G. Eiker, 76, who retired in 1932 after 46 years in Govern- ment service, died Saturday after a long illness at his home, 2001 Kalorama road N.W. Funeral serv- ices were to be held at 5 p.m. today at the residence. Burial will be in Baltimore. A native of Quincy, Pa., Mr. Eiker came to Washington in 1869. Tainter Dies; "Father of the Talkies' - By the Associated Press. SAN DIEGO, Calif, April 22— Charles Sumner Tainter, 85, phys- icist and inventor once associated with Alexander Graham Bell, died Saturday night. With his hard wax disk record Mr. Tainter was creditea with hav- ing made phonographs commer- clally possibl:. He was the inventor of the dictograph and he was the first to transmit sound through the agency of light. He also was known as the “Father of the Talkies.” Mr. Tainter, a native of Watertown, Mass,, began his career as an in- strument maker in Boston. It was there he met Mr. Bell and became associated with the inventor of the telephone. Mr. Bell and Mr. Tainter later went to Washington and organized the Volta Laboratory Association, where they worked for years on nhumerous inventions, including the graphophone. In 1905 Mr. Tainter came to San Diego to retire. However, he set up & laboratory in his home here and worked on minor inventions until he became {ll six years ago. xIvlls widow, Laura F.
