AMUSEMENTS. She Wishes They’d Forget Those Silent Pictures Betty Compson Tires of Hearing ‘Why, I Used to See You When I Was Just a Little Girl’ By HARRY MacARTHUR. Betty Compson has a complaint to make. She is getting mighty tired of having 7 out of every 10 persons who meet her hint that their grandmothers went to school with her. She really does not mind being 40, is rather happy about it in fact and maybe even agree that life begins. But she would prefer not to be remembered as the star of “The Miracle Man,” “Woman to Woman” and some of those other epics of the silent days in which she played. “It dates you too horribly,” Miss Compson was telling an M-G-M publicity man the other day, and he found no reason to keep her views & secret. “I entered pictures at the age of 15, and I'm 40 now, yet three quarters of the fans who re- member me exclaim, ‘Oh, yes, why T used to see you when I was just a little girl’ And half the time they're older than I am.” As a matter of fact we used to see Betty Compson when we were Just a little boy, but we wouldn't tell her if she feels this way. Nor would we tell her that the Motion Picture Almanac lists her birthday a8 March 18, 1897, because it would be ungallant and besides who are we to digress for a mere three years. Anyhow, Miss Compson has an- other complaint to make, this one directed, not to the fans who saw her when, but to the casting direc- tors of Hollywood. She would like to play a lady. A vaudeville violinist at the age of 15, she entered films in 1915 to play in those old Al Christie comedies. From there she made considerable progress, and remem- bers among her favorite vehicles, “Docks of New York,” which was directed by Josef von Sternberg, and “Street Girl.” Of late she has been appearing in “lots of quickies and some nice films” and most recently in “Strange Cargo,” the forthcom- ing Clark Gable-Joan Crawford pic- ture. She is happy about the break in “Strange Cargo,” Miss Compson re- ports, but she still wishes she could play a lady some time. This appearance in “Strange Cargo,” incidentally, brought Miss Compson back to the M-G-M lot after an absence of 12-years. The last time there she was starred with John Gilbert in “Twelve Miles Out.” An aspiring voung actress named Joan Crawford (or maybe it was still Lucille Le Sueur then) had & bit role in the film. * X Xk X ‘The photoplay bill: Warner’s Earle—"'Till We Meet AMUSEMENTS. GREER In the Event of Busy Signal Call REpublic 0800 D. C, Last Laugh on By SHEILAH GRAHAM, ‘What & laugh Katharine Hepburn is having at Hollywood’s expense! ‘When she returns here in June for the fiiming of her “Philadelphia. Story,” Katie will have the complete say-so movie—director, cameraman, and the dition to the nice sum of $150,000. And this for a girl who was called “box -~— office poison” less than two years: ago! I'm glad she’s coming back. It will be fun to hear her say again, “Rarely I am.” Ids Lupino ‘certainly made one heap big mistake when she turned down that role in “Waterloo Bridge” with Vivien Leigh. Ida refused the part for two reasons—one, because Miss Leigh was in it—“and what chance would I have with her in the picture”—and, two, because Ida was hoping to get the feminine lead in “Victory” with Fredric March. The “Victory” role has just been given to THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 1940. Katharine Hepburn Gets Filmdom HOLLYWOOD. on everything connected with the other members of the cast. In ad- puino out on & limb, as they say in Hollywood classics. * % % x ‘The girl in the “Boom Town” picture who is drawing all the masculine ooh’s and ah’s is not Claudette Colbert nor her team- mate Hedy Lamarr. It is a stupen- dous blond called Marian Martin, who is of the overpowering type— if you know what I mean—and I think you do . . . While on this sort of thing, Warners are going to patent the word “oomph.” People wanting to use the word that did Bette Davis is trying to give up smoking. Her ration was 60 a day, and she’s as nervous as & small country in Europe. Most people when they try and cut down on cigarettes, chew gum, but Bette doesn’t chew gum. She’s getting through this difficult time by eating dried prunes. It was funny to see her in the prison dock of a court chewing on her prunes between “takes.” After her current pic- ture is over, Bette leaves on a brief vacation in Honolulu, taking with her Bobby Rogers, & girl friend of former stock theater days whom Bette on her last trip East brought back to live with her. * % % x ‘The most photographed couple at the showing of Frank Capra’s “Cavalcade of Academy Awards"— Jimmy Stewart and Olivia de Havil- land, who arrived near the end of the half-hour short. As the lights went up I heard Olivia say to Jimmy, “Well, darling, I guess we were 100 late—everything seems to be over.” Jimmy seemed very bash- ful during the continued popping of . flashlight bulbs—and rather gingerly held Olivia’s hand—which he dropped immediately after the camera boys were through. It is hard to find out whas is the true status of this romance. The only thing certain is that it started out as a publicity getter. Whether it develops into matrimony—time will tell. Personsglly, I shall be very surprised if the elopement rumors come true. But after the Lana Turner-Artie Shaw and William Powell-Diana Lewis surprises I have given up the risky business of prophecy. * k% % Lost, stolen or strayed—Robert Cummings’ tooth cap.
