THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 1940. Radio Called Ally, Not Competitor, Of Newspaper That radio is an ally and not a competitor of the newspaper, was the opinion expressed before mem- bers of the Women's National Press Club yesterday at a luncheon at the Women's National Press Club by two West Coast managing editors in Washington for the convention of the American Society of Newspaper | Editors which opened today. Sterling, managing editor of the Oregon Journal and president of the So- | ciety, who said the radio proved in- adequate to satisfy the news de- | mands of the public during the | strike in Portland when the city was without a newspaper for five days. Walter P. Jones, editor of thé | McClatchy Newspapers of Sacra- | mento, Calif,, agreed with the Ore- | gon editor that radio boosts news- | paper circulation, instead of ham- pering it. The McClatchy organi- zation owns three newspapers and | five radio stations, he said. The | good will created by the radio sta- | tions increased circulation of the | papers. Mr. Jones added. “People “m listen to a radio flash,” he said, “and then ](‘mk to the papers for verification.” Mr. Sterling also spoke particu- larly of the value of women's !m»| tures in a newspaper. He indicated | that to the average American | woman specialized news of fashions, | cooking, society and home furnish- ings is of more interest than inter- | national news. Ruby Black, president of the r‘lub rlcslded and introduced the speak- ers. Guests included Gladstone | Williams, Washington representa- | tive of the McClatchy papers; Rich- ard Grennell of News Week, Oveta Culp Hobby, executive vice presi- dent of the Houston Post, and wife of former Governor of Texas W. P. * Hobby, publisher and owner of the Houston Post. and Brian Bell of Ihe Associated Press.
