DR.R. T. HOLDEN DIES HEREATTT Prominent Physician Was D. C. Native—Funeral Set Tuesday. Dr. Raymond T. Holden, 77, native of this city and for many years one of its leading physicians, died sud- denly of a heart attack last midnight at his home, 3111 Sixteenth street. Dr. Holden had continued in active practice up to the time of his death. Members of his family said that yes- terday he had made several calls as usual. and that his death was quite unexpected. In recent years he had suffered from heart disease which had caused him to take his duties more lightly, but had appeared in good health. Dr. Holden was born in Washington on April 23, 1860. His parents, who had come to this country from Ireland, lived here many years. During a practice of 51 years in Washington, Dr. Holden had become prominently identified with the medi- | cal profession. He built up a large | practice soon after his graduation from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1881. Before then, he had attended St. John's College. Dr. Holden was active in the Med- ical Society of the District of Colum- bia for many years and was a member 8150 of the American Medical Associa- tion and the Clinical Pathological Society. For a long time he had been on the staff of Providence Hospital. He is survived by his widow, for- merly Miss Celeste Moritz; two sons, William J. Holden and Dr. Raymond T. Holden, jr., both of this city, and | two daughters, Mrs. Len J. Dillon of | Detroit and Mrs. Fred J. Murphy of | Boston. He is also survived by a| brother, Thomas F. Holden, of this| city, and two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Ruckle of Baltimore and Miss Eliza- beth Holden, also of this city. Fuperal services will be held at 10 am. HEWITT Funeral services for Dr. John Na- poleon Brinton Hewitt, 77, linguist and ethnologist, who died Thursday at his home, 1015 East Capitol street, are being held this afternoon in All Souls’ Unitarian Church, with Rev. Dr. U. G. B. Pierce, the pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery. For many years on the staff of the Bureau of American Ethnology, 8mith- sonian Institution, Dr. Hewitt was & recognized authority on Indian lore. He had learned to speak fluently in the six Iroquoian languages and had made extensive studies of other Indian languages and dialects. Since 1894 he had been custodian of manuscripts in the archives of the Bureau of Amer- iéan Ethnology. Dr. Hewitt was the author of many articles dealing with his research and studies.
