Showing off may be of use, Thus providing an excuse Hummer the Hummingbird A GREAT many people love to show off. Probably you know some. Often they are people who really do | not amount to much, but want other people to think they do. Sometimes it is done to try to win the admiration of one particular person. There is a great deal of that particular kind of showing off. Among the little people of the Green Forest and the Green Meadow it is s0, especially among the feathered folk in the Spring and early Sum- mer. Some are beautifully dressed, as you know, and strut and show off their fine feathers. Some sing. Some do funny dances on the ground. A few | show off their skill in flying. Some are always ready to fight to show how brave they are. And it is all done to win the admiration of the ones they | have chosen as mates. Showing off is the beginning of love-making. Hummer the Hummingbird, he of the brilliant green coat and the flash- ing ruby throat, has long been admired by all who have seen him, for he is like a living jewel. He is fully aware of this admiration. Being aware that he and Mrs. Hummer are much the smallest of all the birds, Hummer likes to attract notice by doing things that others cannot do. Otherwise he would not be noticed at all, and one can LACK — WHAT You B CoFFEE AN AV AR Tarzan's determination, even eagerness, to ven- ture into the land of the Kaji did not blind him to the hazards of his journey. Mrs. Hummer, on the other hand, doesn't want to be noticed. She is modestly dressed and much prefers to be unseen. It is for her benefit, to win her admiration, that Hummer does his most unusual showing off, It was Sue who discovered Hum- mer darting from blossom to blos- som in the flower bed, and her squeal of delight brought Sammy and Farmer Brown's Boy. “I wish I could find Hummer’s nest,” said the latter. “I haven't seen Mrs. Hummer this Sum- mer, 50 it may be that they haven't nested as yet.” “If we watch him perhaps he'll show us his nest, if he's Sammy. Meanwhile, in the castle which was the heart of the Kaji kingdom, Stanley Wood fell more and more under the enchantment of the cruel, beauti- ful queen. Finally he could contain himself no longer. Farmer Brown's Boy led the way in' that direction, saying: “Perhaps he's gone up there to perch. Some folks seem to think that Hummingbirds are in the air all the time. Of course, they're not. They perch just like other birds. Look, there he is!” “Oh!” cried Sue. “Just look at him! ‘What's he doing that for?” Just in front of that tree Hummer was going through an odd perform- ance. From a point high in the air he would shoot down at breath- less speed within 4 or 5 feet of the ground and then up in a perftc arc to 8 point as high as where he had started. Without pause he would swing back through that arc to his starting point. Back and forth, back and forth, he swung, as it were. “What?"” cried Sue and Sammy to- gether. “That Mrs. Hummer is somewhere over there. He's performing for her benefit, not ours. Look! There she is, sitting on a little dead twig up there,” replied Farmer Brown's Boy. But, though Sue and Sammy looked and looked, they couldn't see Mrs. Hummer. They didn't mind much, for they had seen Hummer perform his pendulum swing, and that is some- thing that many, even among bird students, never have seen, (Copyright. 1937.) Art From Crude Tools.
