NEW YORK, September 13.—Wheat | cutting is nearing completion in the prairie provinces of Canada, and pre- liminary estimates now place the pro- duction for these provinces at 160,- 000,000 bushels, with the production in Manitoba the highest in 15 years, according to the current crop report | | of the Bank of Montreal. Threshing is well advanced in Mani- toba and Saskatchewan and is under way in Southern Alberta. In Central and Northern Alberta rain has delayed operations, and, while wheat cutting is almost completed, coarse grains require 10 days’ warm weather to ripen. In Manitoba wheat yields and grades are satisfactory. Wheat yields ir Sas- katchewan are low, but grades gener- ally show high quality. Some gocd yields and grades are being obtained in Southern Alberta. CHICAGO PRODUCE. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, September 13 —Based on production to dite and fulfiliment of operating schedules for the balance of the year, 1937 output of automobiles and trucks by domestic and Canadian should exceed 5,100,000 according to Poor's Industry and Investment Surveys. This would be an increase n‘ better | than 11 per cent over last year's opera- tions and fall within 10 per cent of the 1929 peak. During the first seven months of the current year 3,374,000 cars and trucks rolled off the assembly 1in in the same months of 1936, 3,046,000 units were produced. Output for the first three weeks of August is pstimated at 31 per cent above the similar 1936 weeks. “Strikes and increased labor and material costs have cut down the earnings of automobile manufacturers, despite the fact that sales of new cars have been running well ahead of last | year,” continues the report. “During the first six months of 1937 the eight leading producers re- ported net income of $143,649,000, a decline of 18 per cent from the $175,- 188.000 earned in last year's first half. However, steps are being taken to remedy this situation and outlook favors improved earning power, “Although Ford and General Motors have announced increases on their | 1937 models for the balance of the production year, other producers have not fallen in line with this lead, but have generally indicated their inten- tion of raising prices on 1938 models, In the absence of complete informa- tion it is impossible to foretell the extent to which new prices will restore former profit margins. 1t is the feeling in informed circles, however, that a considerable portion of lost ground at least will be regained.” T SRR Italy has a six-year plan for public works in Italian East Africa.
