—e FARDU 10 TAKE OATH TONORRDH Plans to Mark Investiture With Great Ceremony Abandoned. By the Associated Press. CAIRO, Egypt, July 28.—King| Farouk will be invested as ruler of | Egypt tomorrow in a ceremony stripped of elaborate ritual Abandonment of plans to mark the | event with a great and rich Oriental | seligious ceremony has caused much disappointment here. Parouk, in fact, will not be crowned - at all, but will take an oath to launch his active reign. Three reasons were given for elimi- nating the religious ceremony, which was to have taken place in El Rifai| Mosque and in which the sword of | Mohamed Ali the Great was to have | been girded on the King by Sheikh | Moustafa el Maraghi, leader of Egyp- tian Moslems, who once studied at Columbia University. King Farouk hir to have insisted t ritual along the lines of King George's coronation in London would be out of place in Cairo. There is no crown of Egypt and no precedent for a coro- nation, since Farouk is the first Egvp- tian ruler to succeed as King since the Mamelukes of the Middle Ages. | Political leaders, anxious to get the eountry working smoothly under its newly acquired independence, saw an- | other snag in a religious ceremony in | which Sheikh Moustafa, leader of Moslem thought and rector of EI Azhar Arabic University, would of necessity play a dominating role. | Sheikh Moustafa, informed quarters said, hitherto has had no political wer, “Give him the right to ‘anoint and ecrown' our King, and we shall have him meddling in affairs of state,” it was said. The third reason mentioned was the heat of July. when the average tem- perature is around 95 degrees Fahren- heit in the shade, and the strain it THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. UPPER MARLBORO, Md, July 28.—The way was opened by the Prince Georges County Board of Com- missioners yesterday for the reopen- ing of the Avondale Mills at Laurel, Md., closed since 1931, when it was voted to allow the former owner, An- drew G. Steelman, Baltimore textile manufacturer, to regain possession by paying approximately $800 in back taxes. The Avondale Mills, equipped with lace and embroidery machinery valued at approximately $30,000, operated only a few months after completion. Steelman, who appeared before the commission with his attorney, S. Mar- vin Peach, said, following the action of the commissioners, “now I think we can do something, gentlemen.” Assessment Reduced. On the county tax books at an assessed valuation of $14,000, for sale in 1935, at the sale, property for $868.14, the amount of the taxes then due By their action yesterday the commissioners reduced No bids being made His Best Friend Told Him It was his wife, and she told him the i might impose on aged notables taking part in the long-drawn rites. ‘The ceremony, as planned now, real- | Iy will be an investiture. Asked by the commissioners if he would reopen the plant in the near future, Steelman declared: “Yes, this opens the way for get- ting started.” In making his plea to the county governing body, Peach said that un- less the assessment was reduced “all Mr. Steelman can do is tear the build- ings down.” Another Threat Carried Out. ‘Thomas Baxter, supervisor of county assessors, recalled that such a threat had been made by the owner of one of the State's largest textile mills at Laurel some time ago and that the commission had refused to lower the taxes. Within two months a wreck- ing crew was at work tearing the buildings down, he said. Laurel, at one time the State’s lead- ing textile manufacturing center, now has only a few small industries, it was pointed out at the meeting. $60,000,000 NOTE ISSUE ‘The Commodity Credit Corp. yester- day invited subscriptions to a $60,- 000,000 note issue. ‘The notes will be dated August 2, 1937, and will mature May 2, 1938, bearing interest at the rate of 1 per cent. America knows the disastrous results of that costly experiment . .. using 3 sets of tires to go the distance one should travel, blowouts, constant trouble. General Tire warned motorists then that “You can't save rubber by using less of it.” Today, history repeats. When crude rubber was 3¢ a pound all manufac- turers used it extensively. The price of crude rubber has soared—it is up 110%. But here is the important fact. The necessity for using the same quantity of good rubber for the sake of quality does not change regardless of fluctua- tions in rubber prices. Putting reclaimed rubber into a tire is as fundamentally wrong as the subterfuge of putting water in milk. It saves money for the manufac- turer, but it dilutes the quality of the entire rubber structure. When you buy General Tires you buy tires made from fresh, pure, virgin crude rubber.stock.
